Michal Nowakowski wants Witcher fans to let the team cook. The CD Projekt Red joint CEO used a short video posted to The Witcher's official X account to confirm the studio is now targeting a 2028 release window for The Witcher 4, even though the game itself won't appear at Gamescom this week.
Nowakowski said the studio isn't ready to share an exact date, but confirmed 2028 as the current target. He added that the team has "more than 500 incredibly talented developers" working on the project and called it CD Projekt Red's "biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date."
Gamescom itself will still carry some Witcher content, however. CD Projekt Red plans to show off The Witcher 3's upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, on the show floor and during livestreams running from August 25 through 30. Songs of the Past is currently set to launch in 2027, a year ahead of The Witcher 4.
It's worth noting Nowakowski specifically called 2028 a target, not a locked date. Both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 slipped past their original windows before launch, so a further delay for The Witcher 4 wouldn't be out of character for the studio.
A 2028 launch also raises a separate question around physical copies, since Sony has confirmed it will stop producing new PlayStation game discs starting in January 2028. CD Projekt Red hasn't said anything about physical releases for The Witcher 4 on any platform, so it's not clear yet whether that timeline will affect availability on PS5 or a potential PS6 version.
