SK Hynix is doubling down on the AI boom with another massive investment. The South Korean chipmaker's board of directors has approved a 54.3 trillion won investment, roughly $38.1 billion, to build two massive new fabrication plants dedicated to supplying memory for the next generation of AI accelerators and enterprise servers.
SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung said last month that 2027 will be the worst year in the industry's history from a supply perspective. The $38 billion commitment is SK Hynix's answer to that problem.
The company describes the current moment as a structural transformation in which memory has become core infrastructure determining AI performance itself. The $38.1 billion is split across two production centres in South Korea. The larger share, around $24.9 billion, goes toward the Yongin Y2 fab, the second of four fabs planned for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster.

This will be a specialised DRAM mega-factory spanning 1.13 million square meters, with construction beginning in July 2027 and the first cleanroom going online in June 2029 to produce HBM and other next-generation DRAM products. The remaining $13.2 billion is earmarked for the Cheongju M17 fab, focused on NAND flash memory for enterprise SSD storage, with construction starting in February 2027 and the first cleanroom operational by December 2028.
SK Hynix is pointing to Omdia data projecting that both DRAM and NAND demand will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 19% from last year through 2030. By ramping up both at the same time, the company is covering all its bases, fast memory for running AI models and high-capacity storage for training them.

What this investment does not mean, at least in the near term, is relief for consumers. SK Hynix is positioning itself to maintain market share dominance in the AI memory segment, not to flood the consumer market with cheaper RAM. The new fabs will not even be operational until 2028 and 2029, and their output is clearly aimed at the enterprise and AI accelerator market rather than the gaming PC aisle.
