TL;DR: A NexusMods creator discovered Halo: Campaign Evolved's PC files already contain split-screen code and assets; a mod exposes that built-in feature via UE4SS without altering the executable. A second mod adds separate customization and mixed-input support. Both require UE4SS, work on Steam only, and have input caveats.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on PC on July 28 without local split-screen co-op, a feature available on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. NexusMods user JPurd123 found that the PC version of the game never had split-screen removed at all.

The feature is technically sitting right there, enabled in the config files. "The PC build never had it stripped out," JPurd123 wrote in the mod description. "It ships with split-screen already enabled in config (bUseSplitscreen=True), and the split-screen HUD layouts, the sign-in UI, the split-screen VFX variants and the audio parameters are all still cooked into the game files. It just isn't exposed in the menus. This mod calls the code that is already sitting there."

In other words, the mod doesn't recreate split-screen or modify the game's executable. It simply calls functionality that's already present, adding a second local player through UE4SS and bypassing the menu restriction that hides the feature.

There is a second mod that goes further than just unlocking the mode. It adds independent armour and weapon customisation for the second player, separate customisation profiles, keyboard and mouse plus controller support for mixed-input co-op. It also adds a fix for pause menu and second player UI issues, and the ability to set a custom name for the second player.

Before you install either mod, there are a few caveats worth pointing out. Controller input for all players is the most reliable setup currently, with keyboard and mouse combinations sometimes causing the second player to become uncontrollable. Both mods require UE4SS to be installed first. Only the Steam version of the game is currently supported, with the Xbox app version untested due to potential differences in signature files.

Local co-op is one of Halo's defining characteristics, and the code for it shipped fully intact in the PC version. Halo Studios could feasibly enable the feature with a small update. Until then, players will have to rely on third-party mods to access what's already there.
