Microsoft brings backwards compatibility to PC, paving the way for its next-gen Project Helix hybrid console.

Xbox's backwards compatibility program has expanded to PC, where Microsoft is bringing original Xbox console games over to the platform. This is an important step that could lay out the framework for Project Helix, the new Xbox console that is expected to also play Windows PC games.

Four original Xbox games will now be playable on PC as a result of this initiative, which occurs during Xbox's 25th anniversary: the iconic party classic Fuzion Frenzy, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Blinx: The Time Scrapper, and Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. If you already own the games, you'll get a free copy to play on PC, similar to Play Anywhere. This sees Microsoft granting users more cross-generational licensing for specific titles, which is also an important step for Project Helix's gradual rollout.

All four classic games will be optimized for PC with enhancement features like upscaling and VSync, and will also be compatible and playable on Xbox handheld devices.

"This marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve XBOX games from the past and bring them to PC over time. And we are not just enabling you to play them on PC. We are also adding new features to make your gaming experience better than ever," reads the announcement on the Xbox Wire.

"Players can customize graphics settings, including up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync support, Fullscreen and Windowed display modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and more. These games also include customizable language and audio settings.

"We plan to add even more features to XBOX Backward Compatibility games in the future."
