New RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker is complete on disc, doesn't require download to play

As gamers brace for the eventual slow-down of physical media, teams like Bandai Namco and Rebel Wolves are making sure their new game will get preserved with a playable build on the disc.

Physical copies of The Blood of Dawnwalker will have a complete playable version of the game on the disc. Given Sony's recent decision to end physical game disc production for new games after January 2028, the games that come complete on disc become more noteworthy. Publisher Bandai Namco confirmed the news to Eurogamer: "The full game data is on disc, with a day-one patch recommended."

Rebel Wolves' stylish and brutal action RPG joins the plethora of titles that can be accessed offline and don't require a day one patch or an update in order to play--the team at Does It Play have created a repository of thousands of such titles.

The fight for physical media continues in enthusiast circles on social media, and via a change.org petition that has around 333K signatures at the time of writing. Regulators have yet to investigate, but comments from one EU official indicate that an investigation may not even happen.

Ireland's EU Commissioner Michael McGrath was asked about Sony's decision, per the Irish Mirror:

"It does come down to commercial and contractual freedoms, and companies are free to offer games and services in the manner that they see fit, provided that consumer rights are fully protected in line with national and EU law."
