TL;DR: Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey reignited interest in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, prompting players to revisit its Greek setting despite initial criticism over RPG mechanics and protagonist choices. Steam concurrent users rose from ~3.5-4.5k to a peak of 8,522, and social media showed mixed but renewed engagement with the game.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey was a mixed bag when it launched. While it was successful financially for Ubisoft, it left a big chunk of the fanbase disappointed with its gameplay mechanics and story. Hardcore fans of the franchise were disillusioned by Odyssey's RPG-like style and nerfed stealth elements, and many straight-up did not like the protagonists being "mercenaries" rather than white-hooded Assassins.

Regardless of its initial reception, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is getting a surprising second wind in recent weeks, and it has Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" to thank for it. Now, I'm not much of a film guy, but even I know that The Odyssey is a huge deal. It's the first film to ever be shot entirely on 70mm IMAX, has a star-studded cast, and is expected to break all kinds of records after launch. It's fair to say that The Odyssey certainly has a tremendous amount of hype behind it.

That hype has benefitted Ubisoft's 2018 Assassin's Creed entry too. Many gamers saw this as the perfect opportunity to jump back on the game, just to get a feel of the Greek islands once again. Furthermore, the official Assassin's Creed X handle also fed into the hype, reminding players that this might be the perfect time to "begin their Odyssey."

Perhaps more interestingly, many gamers saw this as the opportunity to give Assassin's Creed Odyssey a second fair chance, one that it probably never got the first time around.

Shortly after The Odyssey hit cinema screens across the globe, Assassin's Creed Odyssey started trending on X, with players sharing their thoughts on the game and their renewed interest in playing it. The response was mixed, as one gamer regretted his decision to boot up Odyssey almost immediately.

Steam charts also reflected this positive change, as concurrent players rose from an average of 3500-4500 a few weeks ago to over 7000 in the past week or so. Interest peaked on July 12, with 8,522 people jumping on the game simultaneously. This is just Steam data, and the game is 8 years old, so the numbers are still quite impressive.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey was flawed, sure, but it also had an incredible map, superb graphics, a LOT of content, and its own unique spin on Greek mythology. It certainly deserves a second chance from players who abandoned it simply because of media narratives, and if Nolan's The Odyssey is the reason behind it, then I guess that's fair enough.
