Animator on Avatar movie 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender' responds to full-length leak

Paramount was planning to release The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, a new animated movie based on the cult-classic animated TV series that followed Aang far into his life, on Paramount+ on October 9 this year. However, the entire movie has leaked online, and it's already available on numerous torrenting websites.

Originally, Paramount intended to release the new animated movie in theaters, but throughout its development, it decided that The Legend of Aang would go straight to Paramount+, its streaming service. The leak began on X with a user writing that Nickelodeon had sent them an entire copy of The Legend of Aang, which was followed up by the user threatening Paramount to livestream the movie if the streaming giant didn't release the official trailer for the animated movie.

Shortly after, entire copies of The Legend of Aang began appearing on X, with users receiving links that would expire after a few hours. Those who managed to get an active link were directed to a download via various file-sharing platforms. Simultaneously, clips from the movie were appearing on X and Reddit, some showing critical plot points.

Some users claimed the movie leak was the result of Nickelodeon being "hacked," as they interpreted the original leaker's claim that Nickelodeon emailed them a full copy of the movie as phishing, or as the direct infiltration of a Nickelodeon employee's email account that had access to the full-length copy. Neither scenario has yet to be proven, but the situation has evolved into an animator on The Legend of Aang movie commenting on the recent leak.

"We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that we'd get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters, just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy. I don't like seeing people use Paramount's awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+ but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in," wrote Julia Schoel, animator on The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, in an X post

"Leaking a movie before release undermines the entire effort at its most vulnerable moment. No marketing buildup, premieres, etc, which harms the film's reputation and affects future opportunities for the artists who worked on it...pirating on the other hand, happens after the film has already had the chance to reach audiences through official channels, and does not harm its reputation," added Schoel
