TL;DR: MachineGames, the Swedish developer behind Wolfenstein and Indiana Jones, reported 428.5 million SEK ($44.3M) in net sales and a 6% profit margin for 2024.

Swedish video games developer MachineGames publishes its full-year financials, showing how much sales revenue and profit the Wolfenstein developer makes.

As Microsoft dangles a Sword of Damocles above its workers, creatives at the Xbox are fearful of layoffs--Microsoft has let go of 15,000 workers this year alone, with hundreds of layoffs affecting the games division. This led to game cancellations and studio closures. Margins seemingly matter more than ever, especially when products like interactive entertainment can command budgets of $100 million or more.

While we don't know the total performance of Xbox, we can glean some info by way of Xbox's European subsidiaries. Every year, companies in the European Union will publish their financial reports. The latest round of financials gives a closer look at how much money that Indiana Jones developer MachineGames may generate per year.

In the report, we see that MachineGames has a roughly 6% profit margin for calendar year 2024, with 26.07 million SEK in profit on 428.483 million SEK in net sales. Indiana Jones was released in December 2024, so it is unclear what proportion of game sales is included here, but also remember that the game launched into Xbox Game Pass.

  • Net Sales- 428.483 million SEK ($44.325 million)
  • Operating Expenses -401.470 million SEK ($41.53 million)
  • Net Profit - 26.07 million SEK ($2.679 million)

These numbers need context. MachineGames is a subsidiary of ZeniMax, and isn't a standalone entity, so we can't use this info to really determine the direct success (or lack thereof) of any game or project. These figures aren't straightforward because of the business hierarchy to which they belong. It's unclear how ZeniMax manages its books, and even more unclear how this fits into Microsoft's numbers.

MachineGames is part of the ZeniMax Media banner, and while ZeniMax is technically owned by Microsoft after the $7.5 billion acquisition, ZeniMax still remains a limited-integration company within the group. This means that ZeniMax will manage its own business, keep its own records, and handle its own personnel, but big decisions like game cancellations and even studio closures are at the discretion of Xbox gaming CEO Phil Spencer.

Another point: MachineGames had its highest-ever net sales in 2021 with 474.799 million SEK generated during the year.
