TL;DR: The ASUS ROG Ally gaming handheld was upgraded with a 90Wh battery from the ROG Strix G15 laptop and a larger M.2 2280 SSD, extending battery life from 1.5 to 4 hours. A custom 3D-printed back panel accommodated the bigger battery, enhancing portable gaming endurance and storage capacity.

The ASUS ROG Ally gaming handheld has been modded, adding much more battery life thanks to the use of the ROG Strix G15 gaming laptop battery, and an SSD update. Check it out:

In a new video from YouTuber Miner TechTips, he upgraded the 2023 ASUS ROG Ally gaming handheld to the ROG Ally X specs. The original ROG Ally features a 40Wh battery, but he replaced it with a 90Wh battery that he used from an ASUS ROG Strix G15 gaming laptop.

The modification to the ASUS ROG Ally required physically replacing the battery, but because of its far larger size, he 3D-printed a custom back panel. The additional space allowed the YouTuber to upgrade the SSD to a full M.2 2280 form factor SSD, using a special 90-degree bracket.

Once the upgrades to the ROG Ally were done, it increased the weight of the gaming handheld from 670g to 813g, which is a bit heavier than the faster ROG Ally X which weighs in at around 715g. The bigger battery allows for much longer portable gaming use, with the stock ASUS ROG Ally battery life at around 1 to 1.5 hours, to a much better 3 to 4 hours of battery life.

It's an interesting modification to the ASUS ROG Ally gaming handheld, bringing it more in line (at least in battery life) with newer gaming handhelds that pack a higher 80Wh battery. The cool thing here is the use of 3D-printed parts, making it easier than ever before to do modifications to systems like the ROG Ally handheld.
