DOOM: The Dark Ages just got a significant update, adding Path Tracing and DLSS 4 Ray Reconstruction to the game, which dramatically improves the visual fidelity with full ray-traced lighting. For more on the game's Path Tracing, check out our impressions from an early hands-on we posted the other day.
As part of this update, id Software has provided updated 'Path Tracing Hardware Requirements' for DOOM: The Dark Ages, which confirms that you'll need some serious hardware to run the game in this mode, and a GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM. For 1080p 60FPS, you'll need a GeForce RTX 4070, for 1440p 60FPS, you'll need a GeForce RTX 5080, and for 4K 60FPS, a GeForce RTX 5090.
This is the baseline level of performance. You can then enable Frame Generation or DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation on top of this to boost performance into 100+ FPS territory. Alongside Path Tracing support, the game also got a surprisingly in-depth and detailed Benchmark Mode.
The new Benchmark Mode can be found in the Extras menu. It offers seven different levels and locations in the game to benchmark. Each benchmark run offers a fly-through of an enemy-populated level, so it is a great way to tweak settings to maximize performance.
"Benchmark mode creates a consistent, nearly deterministic path through a section of select DOOM: The Dark Ages levels so that players can see how their systems perform under a variety of video settings," id Software writes. "Using this mode, players can see how far they can push their system performance."
What's great about the Benchmark Mode is that you get a detailed report and live stats showcasing the FPS, total frame time, and GPU and CPU frame time.
