Mortal Kombat 1 will not receive any future DLC content, including new fighters and story updates, NetherRealm has confirmed.

NetherRealm is officially moving on from Mortal Kombat 1. The visceral fighting game released in September 2023 and has received a steady flow of content drops, including a slew of extra fighters across two Kombat Packs as well as a story expansion. Now the game has run its course, and NetherRealm is focusing on its next big project.
"We are hearing players' requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on," the studio wrote in a Twitter update.
"We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can."
While there's no official details on what's next for NetherRealm, it's understood that a new Injustice game is likely on the horizon.
In 2020, shortly before the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were released, we reported that the studio was developing its own next-gen graphics tech for both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises.
We also scouted NetherRealm's job listings for potential clues. Per a job opening for an Advanced Cinematics Animator, it seems whatever the studio is making next will have a story campaign mode:
"NetherRealm Studios, a division of WB Games Inc. seeks an Advanced Animator to be responsible for creating consistent, high-quality cinematic animation for our story mode campaign."
WB Games, the parent of NetherRealm, has decided to go with a "fewer but bigger" strategy for its game releases. This comes after the billion-dollar success of Hogwarts Legacy offset by disastrous fails like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and unfavorable results of Gotham Knights.
