Fresh rumors are swirling about the RX 9060 XT, which is expected to be revealed later this month, and we're now again hearing that there will be both 8GB and 16GB flavors of this GPU.

The fear is that the RX 9060 XT 8GB is going to turn out as problematic as the lesser 8GB version of NVIDIA's RTX 5060 Ti (Image Credit: Pexels)
However, AMD is apparently set to mostly focus on the 16GB model, so the RX 9060 XT graphics card that has 8GB of RAM will be more of a sideshow - in much the same vein as NVIDIA's RTX 5060 Ti, where the 8GB incarnation is difficult to find. There simply aren't many of those GPUs out there (not that many gamers are really looking, anyway).
If you've been following this thread of speculation regarding AMD's next plans for RDNA 4, you'll recall that we were originally told that there'd be 8GB and 16GB variants of this lower-mid-range GPU - then further rumors insisted that AMD had cancelled the RX 9060 XT 8GB version.
And frankly, that possibility was easy enough to believe, given the amount of criticism NVIDIA has faced for its 8GB take on the RTX 5060 Ti, with that lesser VRAM loadout having been clearly shown as a weak point in independent testing.
Now this new report from Chinese tech site Benchlife (highlighted by Wccftech) claims the 8GB version of the RX 9060 XT will indeed be released, but that AMD's production of these GPUs is going to be 'mainly based' on the 16GB board.
Benchlife observes that as far as the potential RX 9060 XT 8GB model goes - and remember, it still isn't confirmed, one way or another - there isn't likely to be much demand from consumers for it, just like its RTX 5060 Ti equivalent.
A GPU for PC builders?
However, where AMD's apparent 8GB spin on the GPU could find a home is with PC builders, who will likely employ the lesser RX 9060 XT in prebuilt machines in order to keep costs down. (And with attractive enough pricing - perhaps cutting corners elsewhere in the PC's spec - these firms will still hope to convince would-be buyers to pull the trigger).
Benchlife also underlines that the reality of the situation is that this late in the day, even if AMD did want to cancel the (purported) 8GB version of the 9060 XT, it's already so far through production-wise that this wouldn't be feasible.
What could happen, though, is we see some initial stock of the RX 9060 XT 8GB floating around for a while - and maybe in a fair few prebuilt machines - then this variant could quickly thin out and disappear.
Time will tell, but we shouldn't have to wait long, as the RX 9060 XT is supposedly set for a Computex 2025 reveal on May 21, when AMD has a keynote where it's already said it will make gaming-related revelations (and others besides).
