TL;DR: Sony's PlayStation Plus line-up for May includes Balatro, Ark: Survival Ascended, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. These games will be available from May 6 (but Ark will only be playable on a PS5). Balatro is the one to watch, though, as this roguelike deckbuilder was a smash hit out of nowhere in 2024, and is ridiculously more-ish.

Sony has revealed the games that PlayStation Plus subscribers will get in May, and they include Balatro, Ark: Survival Ascended, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.

If you're signed up to PlayStation Plus you'll get that trio of games from May 6 if you own a PlayStation 5, although those yet to make the leap from the PS4 platform won't be able to play Ark: Survival Ascended (but they'll be fine with the other two games).

Balatro is, of course, a potently compelling twist on poker, and the roguelike deckbuilder established itself as a massive hit last year, coming from out of nowhere to rack up a ton of sales.

Looking at the game on the face of it, not everyone out there might be convinced of exactly how it plays. But with a whole lot of gamers now set to get it free on PlayStation, we're betting there'll be a lot more addicts soon enough when they give Balatro a spin.

Ark: Survival Ascended is a survival/crafter game as the name indicates (with dinosaurs thrown in), although one that the community has mixed feelings about when it comes to this latest instalment (compared to Ark: Survival Evolved).

In short, Ascended is mostly about a visual upgrade (UE5) and some fine-tuning, and many hardcore players of Evolved are unmoved by it - though it's going to look good on PS5 Pro in particular, no doubt.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is an interesting take on a Doom-style shooter with a true mid-nineties vibe, so that won't be for everyone, but could be worth a whirl just for a quick nostalgic blast.

In short, it's very likely that Balatro will be the game commanding the most hours played this month.
