Introduction, What We Expected
This year's Comic-Con was absolutely massive, with trailers for not only some of the biggest movies of the next 12 months but some of the biggest TV shows coming soon as well. We received trailers to Netflix original TV shows like Stranger Things and The Defenders, joined to the hype of Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok.
Comic-Con has always been a powerhouse event for movie and comic book fans alike, but with trailers to some of the largest TV shows in the world, the show is evolving. Stranger Things is a hot mess of Spielberg, 80s life, and an instant injection of nostalgia. It's pure happiness wrapped in a scary TV world, with an amazing array of music choices, and pure Spielberg looks. Speaking of Spielberg, we had a tease of Ready Player One, which looks AMAZING.
What We Expected
I knew that a new trailer for Justice League would be shown off, and I was really on the fence whether Warner Bros. would show off Superman in the latest trailer. We didn't get to see Superman, but the new trailer to Justice League was freakin' incredible.
The other big trailer I was waiting for was definitely Thor: Ragnarok which met my expectations and some, but I still feel like the previous trailer was a home run with the humor perfectly balanced and edited in the trailer perfectly between Thor and Hulk. We get a deeper look at the situation they're in, and some Bruce Banner action - and not just HULK SMASH mode.
MCU vs DCEU - The Trailers
MCU vs DCEU: FIGHT!!!
The big battle was between the cinematic universes of DC and Marvel, with a longer trailer to Justice League - and a different trailer for Thor: Ragnarok. We might have received Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice last year, but it was another lukewarm DCEU release, something that was changed with the release of Wonder Woman earlier this year.
Wonder Woman was a fresh DCEU movie that took the character of Diana Prince, and perfectly captured her love of being a hero. Superman never got that chance in this reboot of Kal-El, even though he knows he's a symbol of hope and his family crest is the literal meaning of 'Hope,' he never allows himself to be absorbed into the hero role.
He never smiles at being able to do good or kick ass in the middle of a battle, where Wonder Woman only wants to be a hero. Something the movie explains from the very beginning when we see Diana as a little girl, she just wants to do good.
This means a lot was riding on Justice League, which even with the new trailer hasn't shown the world Superman. We know he's a big part of Justice League, but so far he has been invisible.
Marvel has come out swinging with a fresh look in Thor: Ragnarok, taking in the injection of color that James Gunn used in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Thor: Ragnarok has the same ripped-from-the-comic-book color pop that looks great in GotG, and another punch of comedy and fun... oh and more Loki. The more Loki, the better - especially in Thor's last journey in the trilogy of his movies.
Thor: Ragnarok's new trailer at Comic-Con was another fine release by Marvel, showing off the new color and style from GotG, as well as more of a team up movie again. A theme that has continued from Captain America: Civil War (nearly everyone apart from Thor and Hulk), and continued in Spider-Man: Homecoming (Iron-Man is heavily featured - something I'm sure Marvel spent a lot on with Robert Downey Jr. being so expensive to use).
We have Hulk and Loki, both popular characters from the first Avengers and Thor movies. Loki has been one of the best characters in the series, with Tom Hiddleston born for the role of Loki. So much so that there were Thor: Ragnarok reshoots that added more Loki, something I'm completely down with.
Justice League's New Trailer - Still No Superman
Superman is the beacon of hope for Earth, and the most recognizable superhero of all time... but he hasn't been seen in any of the trailers for Justice League, including the new trailer from Comic-Con. Superman's return will be one of the biggest parts of Justice League, as we don't know what his return will entail.
Will he be back to normal after being killed by Doomsday in Dawn of Justice? We know he's alive since the dirt moved on his coffin in the end of Batman v Superman, but will it be the Supes we all know and love?
Could he return with the black Superman suit that Henry Cavill teased on Instagram earlier this year?
Superman could even rock a beard, which would be beyond awesome. A bearded, evil Superman? Is this who The Flash warned Bruce about in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, when Flash appears to Bruce in a time portal, warning him of Superman and Lois being the key? The Flash said: "Bruce! Listen to me right now! It's Lois! Lois Lane! She's the key! Am I too soon!? I'm too soon! You were right about him! You were always right about him! Fear him! Fear him and find us. You have to come find us, Bruce!".
That sounds like Superman being evil to me... so bearded Supes with a black suit? PLEASE, DC... but I have one request: bad Superman is beaten by Justice League, for the true Superman to arrive after. I want the true hero behind Superman to be in Justice League, but I'm totally down with a pissed off, and vengeful Kal-El.
Thor: Ragnarok Looks AWESOME
I've been a big fan of the Thor movies, and while Thor: The Dark World wasn't the best entry (like Iron Man 2 didn't live up to Iron Man), Thor: Ragnarok actually looks awesome. Chris Hemsworth (a fellow Aussie) plays Thor so incredibly well and has pushed a much more humorous and lighthearted touch on Thor for Ragnarok.
One of the key parts of the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer from Comic-Con is seeing Hulk in his full Planet Hulk gear before he beats the living crap out of Thor in the arena.
Another Australian actor is in Thor: Ragnarok as Hela, the goddess of death and the ruler of Hel. She invades Asgard and pretty much blows it to ashes. Thor is building a team to fight Hela, something that will see Hulk and Loki join forces with Thor, which is exciting, to say the least.
There's also another big actor that will provide some evil comic relief, with Jurassic Park alumni Jeff Goldblum. He kicked aliens' ass in Independence Day, but now Goldblum is in the MCU running games on his planet, which is rumored to be Sakarr from Planet Hulk.
Ready Player One!
Spielberg... Don't Disappoint Me
Another massive trailer released at Comic-Con is Ready Player One from the amazing talent inside of Steven Spielberg, which is a massive jump into the 80s and the future, all in VR. It provides the world with our first look of OASIS, the virtual world you can put on your face in the world 2045. Ready Player One is an iconic book that most people in the VR/AR/MR industries all took influence from.
OASIS opens up the world of letting you control an avatar in a virtual world, where you see NPCs and other human players inside of the VR world.
Inside of this world, there are massive easter eggs from movies in our world - including Iron Giant, Back to the Future, and even Freddy Kruger making a surprise appearance. Spielberg has nailed the look and feel of Ready Player One, which is sitting in the lofty heights of my most anticipated movies of 2018.
Marvel's The Defenders, Stranger Things S2!
Marvel TV Continues Marching Forward
One of the biggest shows of the last few years would have to be Stranger Things, a Netflix exclusive show with so much influence from Steven Spielberg, and the 80s. The season enjoyed a massive Comic-Con trailer that increases the strangeness going on in Stranger Things, with a debut in October just around the corner.
The other big tease from Netflix and Marvel was the Comic-Con trailer to The Defenders, which sees Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all join forces to become The Defenders. Sigourney Weaver joins the case as Alexandria.
Gizmodo reviewed the first episode of The Defenders and explained Weaver playing Alexandra as "terrifying". Gizmodo continued: "She's poised and polished and absolutely driven. Clothed in white, she gives off a power that clearly has been sitting on her shoulders a long time. This isn't a villain lashing out because of some hurt. She has a goal, and everyone else is being pulled along in its wake".
Will Smith joins Netflix exclusive movie 'Bright' which is directed by David Ayer, who recently disappointed us with Suicide Squad, also starring Will Smith. It looks good, but I'll reserve judgment until December 22.
Westworld + Star Trek: Discovery
We can't write an article about the big trailers from Comic-Con and not include the season two trailer to Westworld, from HBO. Westworld was one of the most talked about TV shows in recent years, with HBO teasing a surprise look at the season now that the robots have taken control.
Another trailer that is worthy of discussion is Star Trek: Discovery, but not everyone is convinced just yet. But it's definitely something different in the Star Trek universe... that's for sure.
