Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 21, 2016 12:29 PM CDT

Now that Nintendo's Switch console has been revealed, we all thought the crazy NX rumor war was over. But it looks like it's just begun: Nintendo only gave us a preview, giving us even more questions than answers. The Japanese console-maker has drip-fed specific tidbits like the Switch's lack of Wii U or 3DS backward compatibility and briefly talking about the tablet's battery life, but reports sprang up quite fast.

Nintendo won't reveal full Switch specs until 2017

Considering there's tons of Nintendo Switch reports flying around such as handheld's mediocre battery life or the console enjoying extra processing power while docked, you'd think Nintendo would want to step in and clear things up. But Nintendo has zipped its mouth shut, and won't be revealing any new Switch info until 2017.

The Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki reports that Nintendo won't be reveal any more details about the Switch until 2017, including info about its games, specifications, pricing, or other major updates including region-lock, the possibility of Wii U games showing up on the Switch's eShop, Virtual Console games, or anything else.

Nintendo's new Switch console may perform better while docked for living room play than it does on the go.

Nintendo Switch may have extra power while docked

Based on Nintendo's response to IGN, we recently reported that Nintendo's new Switch console dock wouldn't boost GPU or CPU performance, but it looks like we might've been wrong: three separate sources, including unnamed Ubisoft and Nintendo sources, have told Let's Play Video Games Editor-in-Chief Laura Kate Dale that the Nintendo Switch dock will provide a processing boost to the main tablet console.

Mass Effect: Andromeda has 1080p enhancements on PS4 Pro

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 21, 2016 11:16 AM CDT

BioWare has confirmed that Mass Effect: Andromeda will run at upscaled 4K 30FPS on Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro, but what about HDTV owners? Can we expect any enhancements in 1080p? Console architect Mark Cerny confirms HDTV owners won't be left out.

Mass Effect: Andromeda has 1080p enhancements on PS4 Pro

With Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro, devs have a ton of enhancement options for their games: they can enable different resolutions like native 4K and upscaled 4K with checkerboard rendering techniques, enable HDR, tweak frame rates to fit resolutions (like upscaled 4K 30FPS), add in 1080p 60FPS or even boost visuals in 1080p with supersampling.

Devs can also employ one or all of these enhancements into their games, but it's ultimately up to each dev. Rise of the Tomb Raider, for example, hits 4K 30FPS and 1080p 60FPS on PS4 Pro and even has an Enhanced Visuals mode at 1080p 30FPS.

Nintendo Switch's battery may only last for 3 hours

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 21, 2016 9:02 AM CDT

UPDATE: Ubisoft sources have apparently told Laura Kate Dale, Editor-in-Chief for Let's Play Video Games, that the Nintendo Switch's battery only lasts 3 hours. There are other reports that the Switch has "mediocre" battery life, despite Nintendo's following statements and NVIDIA's customized Tegra chip, which may or may not be power efficient.

Nintendo Switch's battery may only last for 3 hours

Given the accuracy of Dale's information leading up to the Switch's reveal, this could be factual, and may go against our speculations below.

The headline of this article has been updated to reflect the new information.

Nintendo Switch not backward compatible with Wii U games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 21, 2016 7:12 AM CDT

Nintendo has officially confirmed that it's new Nintendo Switch console-handheld hybrid has no physical backward compatibility support.

Nintendo Switch not backward compatible with Wii U games

Although the NVIDIA Tegra-powered Nintendo Switch uses cartridges called Game Cards, the new platform won't play Nintendo 3DS cartridges, nor is it compatible with Wii U game discs. Nintendo told Famitsu that the Switch is "a completely new game machine" and "since the Nintendo Switch is not a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS successor machine, it will not play Wii U disc software and/or Nintendo 3DS cards."

Nintendo's decision to nix backward compatibility with the Switch somewhat clashes with the company's recent move to meld past successes with new systems, as the Wii U can be booted up in Wii mode and function as a fully-fledged legacy Wii system. Nintendo has made it clear that it defines the Switch as a completely separate system from the Wii U, and the Japanese console-maker is keen on distancing the Switch as far as possible from its failed predecessor.

Ubisoft teases 'game changing' patch for The Division

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 21, 2016 12:15 AM CDT

The Division has been an interesting adventure for both Ubisoft and gamers, but the company is planning a massive launch for its forthcoming v1.4 update for The Division, planned for release next week on all platforms.

Update 1.4 is now ready, launching on October 25 and thanks to gamers on the Public Test Server of the PC version of The Division, we're closer than ever. PTS gamers have been testing the new overhauls, updates, bug fixes, and changes for The Division with its v1.4 patch, so that the patch launches with [hopefully] no problems. Ubisoft is introducing something called World Tiers with v1.4, which enables players to globally change the difficulty of their world to match their gear scores and find better loot for their class level.

The new system will hopefully fix the progression system for players at level 30, making the game feel like it has direction, instead of being bored as you scale higher and higher through levels. Ubisoft has completely reworked time to kill, with GameRant reporting: "Ubisoft has completely reworked time to kill, improving player health for extra survivability while reducing enemy health to make them less of a bullet sponge especially at higher difficulties".

NVIDIA is looking to really secure the mid-range graphics card market with the impending release of its GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, priced at $109 and $139, respectively... but AMD isn't taking the mid-range battle sitting down.

AMD to launch cut-down RX 470, competes with GTX 1050 Ti

Nintendo Switch pre-order priced at AUD$999 in Australia

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 20, 2016 8:27 PM CDT

Nintendo announced their next-gen Switch console in the last 24 hours, their new exciting console that's powered by a custom Tegra processor made by NVIDIA. But how much is the new Nintendo Switch console?

Australian game retailer EB Games has a placeholder price of AUD $999 for Nintendo Switch, which works out to $762 - very expensive, and more expensive than the Xbox One S, or PS4 Pro. It's a placeholder price, with rumors of a $350 ish price on Switch circling around right now. I would expect Switch to cost $499 in Australia and $349 in the US, but seeing the $1000 price on Switch in Australia had me in cold sweats. EB Games has placeholder prices on Switch, and the next-gen games - these prices will drop, but I'm sure Australian gamers are crying into their hands at that $999 list price right now.

EB Games is also listing Nintendo Switch games at AUD$119.95, or around USD$91.

AMD revenues up 23% thanks to record SoC, GPU, APU sales

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 20, 2016 7:15 PM CDT

AMD has posted their Q3 earnings, reporting revenues of $1.3 billion for the quarter, beating analysts expectations of $1.21 billion for the three-month period.

AMD is riding record semi-custom SoC designs that made it into Microsoft's new Xbox One S, as well as their upcoming Xbox Scorpio console, and Sony's new PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles. The company also reported higher GPU and mobile APU sales, but were partially offset by client desktop processor and chipset sales.

Lisa Su, AMD's president and CEO said in a statement: "Our third quarter financial results highlight the progress we are making across our business. We now expect to deliver higher 2016 annual revenue based on stronger demand for AMD semi-custom solutions and Polaris GPUs. This positions us well to accelerate our growth in 2017 as we introduce new high-performance computing and graphics products".
