MAXSUN has demonstrated a compact workstation built around a Z890 Mini-ITX motherboard that connects a discrete GPU by routing its PCIe 5.0 link through MCIO cabling rather than a conventional PCIe x16 slot. The system was shown at Intel Connection 2026 in China, highlighting how the high-density connector standard can provide greater flexibility for small-form-factor workstation designs.
MAXSUN officially announced the MS-Challenger MCIO ITX platform in June 2026, as part of an effort with Intel to expand the MCIO ecosystem. MCIO stands for Mini Cool Edge I/O, and can carry high-speed PCIe over cable instead of forcing the PCIe endpoint to plug directly into the motherboard.
The 74-pin MCIO 8i connector used by MAXSUN carries up to eight PCIe lanes, so the board uses two connectors to expose a full 16-lane interface. This raises an obvious question: how is it different from a conventional PCIe riser cable?

A riser still requires the motherboard to accommodate a roughly 89mm-long PCIe x16 slot, whereas MCIO terminates those lanes in much smaller cable connectors directly on the PCB. The lanes can also be bifurcated between multiple devices rather than being permanently tied to one physical x16 slot.
The defining feature is how this architecture changes the system's physical layout. Instead of mounting the GPU directly alongside the motherboard, an MCIO cable can route the PCIe connection elsewhere in the chassis. MAXSUN demonstrated the concept by placing the motherboard and discrete GPU on opposite sides of Cooler Master's i100 Air chassis. The system also incorporates a Hyper 510 low-profile CPU cooler and a V850 SFX Gold power supply.

Using both MCIO 8i connectors, the platform can provide a full PCIe 5.0 x16 connection to a single device. MAXSUN's Z890 and Q870 implementations also support PCIe lane bifurcation. System builders can split the interface into x8+x8 or x8+(x4+x4) modes, enabling simultaneous connectivity for graphics, M.2 storage arrays, or specialized expansion cards in compact systems.

The approach could prove useful for compact workstations, edge-AI systems, and other high-density platforms where GPU dimensions and internal airflow can complicate traditional layouts. For now, MAXSUN has presented the system as a demonstration rather than a confirmed retail configuration, and it has not announced pricing or an official release date.
