DLSS 5 has already spread well beyond its original single-game debut. NVIDIA intended the technology to launch exclusively with NBA 2K27, but modders quickly forced it into other AAA titles, and then took it a step further by bringing NVIDIA's neural renderer to the entire desktop screen. Now, a developer has pushed it somewhere NVIDIA never designed it to go: a web browser.
Developer MAAN has demonstrated DLSS 5 running with 3D graphics directly inside a browser, using WebGPU rather than any native application. "DLSS 5 running in the browser with #webgpu," MAAN wrote on X. "And yes it works on macOS too. You can also try it with your own models." A live demo is currently available for anyone to try.
Unsurprisingly, NVIDIA doesn't offer a supported path for running DLSS in a browser at all. The company's current SDK documentation is built around native applications using DirectX or Vulkan, typically through NVIDIA's NGX interface or the Streamline SDK. Streamline sits between an application and the graphics API, with developers feeding it resources like motion vectors, depth data, and the rendered frame directly. None of that maps cleanly onto a browser's rendering pipeline, and WebGL or WebGPU aren't listed as supported DLSS interfaces anywhere in NVIDIA's documentation.

MAAN hasn't published technical details yet, so it's unclear exactly how the browser renderer is connecting to DLSS, whether it's routing through NVIDIA's standard binaries via some kind of native bridge, converting browser-rendered resources for external processing, or using another method entirely. The developer said the source code will be published on GitHub soon, which should clarify how the project works under the hood.

Based on our own attempt to try the demo, it's clearly an early proof of concept rather than something ready for real-time use. The interface offers a handful of options to experiment with, including different 3D scenes to load, style presets like cinematic and natural looks, and sliders for adjusting intensity, local tone, local structure, and skin structure. Performance, however, is rough. Loading the Neural Rendering model alone reportedly took a second or two even on an RTX 4090, and while the demo does run on Apple Silicon, it's far from fast there either. We found it fairly demanding on system resources and struggled to get it running smoothly during testing.

That performance ceiling likely rules out real-time gaming applications for now.
