Valve has commented on the Steam Deck 2 release timeline amid the ongoing RAM crisis, which is pressuring the entire gaming market, including consoles, PCs, and handhelds.
Despite rising component costs and reports of inflated Steam Deck prices, Valve remains committed to delivering a true "generational leap" in performance for Steam Deck 2. According to Pierre-Loup Griffais, Valve's software developer, the company is still targeting the same performance and user experience goals. "We're still looking at it in the same way," he said during a recent interview.
According to the Valve official, the challenge remains finding the right price-to-performance sweet spot that makes the product viable in a competitive handheld market, the same issue the Steam Machine faced when it launched earlier this year.
The Steam Deck 2 has long been a moving target, with Valve repeatedly insisting it wants to wait for the right hardware before launching, as what it envisions for the new handheld requires hardware that currently doesn't exist.
"Not really," said Pierre-Loup Griffais, SteamOS developer currently working on the Steam Deck. "We've talked before about how we want to make sure there's a very delineated performance improvement for something like a future Steam Deck, and I think we're still looking at it in the same way.
The RAM shortage has only complicated the equation even further, but Valve insists its internal roadmap remains on track, despite the rising costs of key components such as RAM and storage. This shortage isn't exclusive to the upcoming Steam Deck 2, as even current Steam Deck models have seen price hikes of up to 43%.
"It's just a matter of looking at the current conditions and seeing how and when we can deliver something like that. But from what we're working on, as far as the user experience goes and what the product that we're trying to build goes, it's very similar goals."
As for the Steam Deck 2, Valve hasn't revealed a concrete timeline, meaning the Steam Deck 2's release officially remains speculative. Valve's focus now is refining the product experience and ensuring it delivers a compelling upgrade, and I suppose it's also waiting for the right hardware to power it.
