Blizzard's iconic sci-fi franchise is back in an all-new way. At BlizzCon 2026, the studio revealed a new StarCraft shooter led by former Far Cry lead Dan Hay.

During the reveal, Hay confirmed that StarCraft would be an open-world shooter that's gritty and tough, paying homage to the series but also "pushing beyond." The shooter is due out sometime in 2030, and Blizzard also revealed a cinematic sequence called Dominion, and the visual quality is predictably off the charts.

Here's what Hay said during his impassioned on-stage speech:

"There was an opportunity, this time there was a mission to assemble the team worthy of carrying the legacy of one of Blizzard's most beloved games.

"A team built with one purpose, with one goal, to return to a universe forged in interstellar war. This is something new, an open-world shooter where every step is earned, not from above, but down in the mud, in the fire, honoring the past, its tone, its truth, but with an opportunity to push beyond it.

"We are here standing shoulder to shoulder with you, we are here to reignite this universe alongside each and every one of you. We here to make StarCraft"

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

What part of the StarCraft universe will the new open-world shooter be set in?

It appears to be set in the Dominion, based on the cinematic title and the "sons and daughters of the Dominion" message shown at the reveal. The story does not give a more specific location or faction beyond that.
Question #2

How does Blizzard say this new game will connect to StarCraft's existing lore and factions?

Blizzard says the game will honor StarCraft's past, tone, and truth while still "pushing beyond" it. The reveal also points to the Dominion as part of that connection, with the cinematic titled Dominion and the speech calling on "the sons and daughters of the Dominion," so it appears tied to StarCraft's existing human faction and its interstellar war setting.
Question #3

Is Dan Hay leading development at Blizzard, and what has he done before joining this project?

Yes. Dan Hay is leading the new StarCraft shooter at Blizzard, and the reveal identified him as the former Far Cry lead. That is the only prior role mentioned before this project.
Question #4

What kind of gameplay has Blizzard hinted at for the open-world shooter beyond the gritty tone?

Blizzard has hinted that the game will be an open-world shooter, with Dan Hay saying it is meant to be "earned" and fought for on the ground rather than from above. The reveal also framed it as a new take on StarCraft that honors the series while "pushing beyond" it. A separate story, New Diablo 2 FPS footage released by modder, is unrelated, while Report: Blizzard's new Starcraft shooter may be shown at Blizzcon 2026 said it could be a third-person action shooter.
