DLSS 5 now works on RDNA 4 GPUs through a mod, RX 9070 XT runs DLSS 5 in Cyberpunk 2077 at abysmal frame rates

A new mod has introduced DLSS 5 support to AMD RDNA 4 GPUs, but performance is far from playable with AMD's RX 9070 XT dropping below 20 FPS.

TL;DR: A GitHub mod called "DLSS-NR-on-AMD" enables NVIDIA DLSS 5 on RDNA 4 GPUs (including the RX 9070 XT) by using a custom executable and an NVIDIA DLSS DLL; visuals in Cyberpunk 2077 improved, but initial performance was under 20 FPS (later updated to ~30 FPS at 1080p), and the modder aims for RTX 5070 Ti parity.

Yet again, modders have figured out a way to make DLSS 5 work on unsupported hardware, with this latest example being the most extreme yet, featuring AMD hardware running DLSS 5. Reported by Ancient Gameplays on YouTube, a modder by the name of Daniel published a mod on GitHub called "DLSS-NR-on-AMD" that makes DLSS 5 work on RDNA 4 GPUs, including the RX 9070 XT.

The mod uses a custom executable, along with a specific build of NVIDIA's DLSS DLL to introduce RDNA 4 compatibility to DLSS 5 (and add DLSS 5 to games that don't support it). Currently, the mod has only been tested on RDNA 4 GPUs, but RDNA 3 support technically exists. The mod's creator welcomes people to try the mod on RDNA 3 and report their experience with it.

Footage of Cyberpunk 2077 from Ancient Gameplays shows DLSS 5 working as intended on the RX 9070 XT with shadows, and highlights looking more realistic than native rendering. But unsurprisingly, performance was far from perfect; Ancient Gameplays recorded frame rates well under 20 FPS, making the mod barely useful for anything beyond capturing screenshots, at least in Cyberpunk 2077. That said, the modder has since published a new update that reportedly achieves 30 FPS at 1080p with the RX 9070 XT in Cyberpunk 2077.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question #1

Does the DLSS 5 mod also work on RDNA 3 GPUs?

The mod has only been tested on RDNA 4 GPUs, but RDNA 3 support technically exists according to the modder. The creator welcomes people to try the mod on RDNA 3 and report their experience.
Question #2

Which games can use DLSS 5 through this mod, even if they don't officially support it?

The mod has been shown running DLSS 5 in Cyberpunk 2077 on an RX 9070 XT. The primary article states the mod is designed to add DLSS 5 to games that do not officially support it, but it does not list other specific titles. (Related article: New DLSS 5 Swapper tool can mod DLSS 5 into games that don't support DLSS at all.)
Question #3

How well does DLSS 5 run on an RX 9070 XT in Cyberpunk 2077?

Question #4

Did the mod actually improve image quality on the RX 9070 XT?

The mod shows that NVIDIA's DLSS technology can be ported over to AMD GPUs, with any hardware incompatibilities being remedied by software. Whether or not performance can be improved to reach parity with Blackwell GPUs remains a mystery, but the modder claims that they have a set goal of getting DLSS 5 to run at performance parity with an RTX 5070 Ti on an RX 9070 XT. It is worth mentioning that this mod is not FSR masquerading as DLSS, as has been the case with some older DLSS mods, but this specific mod is reportedly the real DLSS 5 neural renderer ported to RDNA 4.
