Modder implements DLSS 5 into Control using DLL from NBA 2K 27, mod drops performance from 71 FPS to 35 FPS on an RTX 5070 Ti

PopularModders have implemented DLSS 5's character customization features into Control just hours after a DLSS 5 DLL was reportedly discovered in NBA 2K 27 files.

TL;DR: Modders extracted a DLSS 5 DLL found in NBA 2K27 and added DLSS 5 character-styling controls into Control, enabling real-time sliders for tone, local structure, skin structure, and neural renderer intensity. Running only on character models at 4K reportedly cut RTX 5070 Ti performance from 71 FPS to 35 FPS.

Modders have successfully modded DLSS 5 into Control, using a DLSS 5 DLL file recently discovered in NBA 2K27. Discovered by Compusemble on X, a modder from RenoDX demonstrated the mod functioning in Control, featuring developer controls to change the look of the main character in real time.

So far, the modders only have the DLSS 5 feature set working on character models. A video from the modder shows several sliders the user can use to change DLSS 5's styling, including controls for tone strength, local structure strength, skin structure strength, and the intensity of the DLSS 5 neural renderer itself.

Popular Now: Modder implements DLSS 5 into Control using DLL from NBA 2K 27, mod drops performance from 71 FPS to 35 FPS on an RTX 5070 Ti

Allegedly, GPU performance on an RTX 5070 Ti with DLSS 5 running purely on the character's model at 4K dropped from 71 FPS to 35 FPS. This result should in no way be taken as DLSS 5's real performance numbers, as the technology is still in a pre-release state. But it does back up NVIDIA's claim that development builds of DLSS 5 have been substantially more demanding than DLSS 4/4.5 to run. By substantially, we mean requiring two RTX 5090s to run the model in a game.

The fact that this mod has been executed in Control just hours after reports arrived that NBA 2K27 had a DLSS 5 DLL suggests we could see more games being modded with DLSS 5 in the future. The existence of this mod also suggests that NVIDIA's DLSS 5 can be implemented in a way that doesn't require in-depth engine integration. If this is so, the possibility of DLSS 3/4/4.5 overrides extending to DLSS 5 in the NVIDIA App is not that far-fetched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

Which parts of Control did the DLSS 5 mod affect and which features were implemented?

The mod affected only character models in Control, specifically the main character's appearance in real time. Implemented features include developer controls and several sliders for DLSS 5 styling: tone strength, local structure strength, skin structure strength, and the intensity of the DLSS 5 neural renderer. The mod reportedly reduced GPU performance on an RTX 5070 Ti from 71 FPS to 35 FPS when applied to the character model at 4K.
Question #2

How did the modder integrate the DLSS 5 DLL from NBA 2K27 into Control — was engine-level integration required?

Question #3

What developer controls and slider options does the DLSS 5 implementation expose for character customization?

Question #4

What performance change was observed on an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K with DLSS 5 applied to character models?

Allegedly, performance on an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K dropped from 71 FPS to 35 FPS when DLSS 5 was applied purely to the character model. This result comes from the modder's demonstration and is noted as a pre-release, non-final performance indication.

NBA 2K27 is the first game (discovered so far) to have a DLSS 5 DLL included in the game's files, with the DLL featuring a 3x larger file size compared to DLLs for DLSS 4. DLSS 5 is NVIDIA's successor to DLSS 4.5, announced to arrive this fall as an exclusive feature for RTX 50 series GPUs.
