CD Projekt is breaking gaming norms by developing a new expansion for a decade-old RPG, but it certainly helps that the game in question is one of the most beloved entertainment releases of all time. The Witcher 3 has seen multiple re-releases, and will get yet another with the newly-announced Witcher 3 Remastered, which primes it for a premium new $40 expansion some 11 years after its original launch.
For CD Projekt, this refresh cycle gives The Witcher 3 more opportunities to penetrate a multi-generational market via new titles across different platforms. Growing the bed of main game sales also gives the studio more opportunity to sell expansion content, which elongates and carries the series forward into the future. Interestingly enough, analysts believe the new remaster could boost total lifetime sales by multiple millions of units, representing a good sales bump for the entire series.
"We expect the remaster launch to have a meaningful positive impact on the company's fourth quarter results, while also helping to further expand The Witcher 3 installed base ahead of the release of Songs of the Past, potentially to 70-75 million copies by then," Erste Group analyst Krzysztof Tkocz tells investors, as per a report from Reuters.
The Witcher's current figures are 90 million for the entire franchise, but that was as of Q1, and CD Projekt is about to post its Q2 figures at the beginning of September. The numbers also had The Witcher 3 at 65 million, and the game typically sells multiple millions of copies per year.
