Seasonic has become the first manufacturer to earn 80 PLUS Ruby certification for an ATX power supply. The company's new Prime Enterprise RX-1600 hit the mark at 115V, putting it above every other ATX PSU currently on the market in terms of certified efficiency.

Ruby is a brand new efficiency tier above Titanium, and it's a tough one to clear. A power supply needs to hit 85% efficiency at just 5% load, 91% at 10% load, 93% at 20% load, 95% at 50% load, and 91% at full load. That low-load requirement is particularly important, since most systems spend the bulk of their time sitting well under full power draw, rather than maxing it out.

Seasonic CEO Walter Sun said reaching Ruby reflects years of engineering focus, adding that every additional percent of efficiency gets harder to squeeze out. He noted the gains still matter because they add up to real savings at scale.

This isn't Seasonic's first time setting the pace on efficiency certifications. The company was first to certify a PSU under the original 80 PLUS program back in 2005, and first to hit 80 PLUS Gold in 2008. It also previously built the Prime TX-1600 Noctua Edition, one of the more well-regarded 1600W Titanium units on the market before Ruby existed.

The RX-1600 is aimed squarely at high-wattage desktops, workstations, and AI systems. In these systems, sudden power draw swings and dense installations make every percentage point of efficiency matter more. CLEAResult, the group that administers the 80 PLUS program, said Ruby is meant to set the pace for what other manufacturers will chase as they head into 2027.

Question #1

Why is the low-load (5–20%) efficiency requirement important for real-world system energy savings?

Because most systems spend the bulk of their time well under full power draw, efficiency at low loads (5-20%) reduces wasted energy during typical operation rather than just at peak. Even single-digit percentage improvements at those low loads add up to real energy and cost savings when multiplied across many systems or dense, high-wattage installations. The primary article also notes that in systems with sudden power-draw swings and dense deployments, every percentage point of efficiency matters more.

Question #2

Will Seasonic's Ruby-certified technology likely appear in future consumer or gaming PSUs based on this announcement?

Seasonic’s Ruby-certified RX-1600 is an enterprise-focused unit rather than a typical consumer gaming PSU, so the announcement does not confirm immediate consumer or gaming models. The article does state that Ruby-certified components tend to trickle down to consumer product lines over time, so this could be an early sign that high-end gaming PSUs may adopt the technology in the future.

Question #3

Are there any confirmed pricing or retail availability details for the RX-1600 for DIY builders?

No. The article states pricing and availability details for regular DIY builders are not confirmed yet, noting the RX-1600 is an enterprise-focused unit rather than a typical consumer gaming PSU. It says Ruby-certified tech may trickle down over time but gives no specific retail or price information.
