Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up

MSI's MPG 321URX was heavily praised as one of, if not the best, gaming monitors at the time, offering stunning visuals and buttery smooth performance with its 4K, 240Hz refresh rate. Now, MSI has released its replacement, the MPG 322URX.

A quick look at the : MSI MPG 322URX Gaming Monitor

At the time, the MPG 321URX set the standard for 4K 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitors, and now the company is looking to build upon what it created with the 322URX, adding a few more bells and whistles for those on the fringe use cases, and also cleaning up some of the criticized aspects of the 321URX. Throughout this review, I will be taking a look at how these two monitors compare and attempting to determine if it's worth upgrading to the latest model if you have purchased the 321URX.

Additionally, I will attempt to identify the type of gamer that would benefit the most from such an upgrade and what they will have in store for them, both positively and negatively. Firstly, the 322URX is quite a pricey monitor, coming at the cost of $1299, according to the current listing on Newegg. Comparatively, the 321URX is now priced at $949.99, bringing the difference total to $349. We shall find out why that $349 is worth it or if a gamer should steer clear of the latest model and pick up the previous generation. Let's get into it.

Design

The difference in physical appearance between the 321URX and the 322URX is absolutely nothing at all, as the 322URX appears to use the exact same shell as its predecessor, even down to the placement of the grill holes located on the back of the display. Keeping to physical appearance, both monitors feature the silver chin with MSI branding in the dead center. Below that branding is an LED light that shines a misty white when the monitor is operational and a red/yellow color in standby.

Directly behind the MSI branding is the multi-direction joystick, which is straddled by two buttons. The left side is the power button, and pressing the multi-directional joystick will open up the On-Screen-Display options. This design is no different than the 321URX.

Keeping to the back of the display, the connectivity options are where things between the two monitors begin to differ - not in quantity, but in quality. The 321URX features the following connectivity options: 2x USB 2.0 Type-A, 1x USB 2.0 Type-B, 1x DisplayPort 1.4a, 2x HDMI 2.1, and 1x USB-C w/90W power delivery charging. MSI has stepped things up a notch with the 322URX, adding in 1x DisplayPort 2.1a with UHBR20.

For those who don't know, UHBR20, or (Ultra High Bit Rate) is a DisplayPort mode that is a stamp verifying the monitor is capable of uncompressed video output. DisplayPort 2.1a is capable of 80Gbps of bandwidth, which is double that of DisplayPort 1.4a at 32.4Gbps. Released in 2022, UHBR20 is the peak of what is currently capable of video card outputs, and arguably even overkill given today's standards of gaming - especially considering the feature is locked to the most recently released graphics cards (NVIDIA's RTX 50-series and AMD's Radeon RX 9000-series).

With that in mind, you will need one of the latest graphics cards to take advantage of this feature, and if you think you can get away with your RTX 4090 or lower 4000-series GPU, think again, as those cards are limited to DisplayPort 1.4a. This doesn't mean the 322URX won't work on GPUs older than the latest, as the monitor will simply scale down to DisplayPort 1.4a standards. You will still get the juicy 4K/240Hz resolution and refresh rate, just not in an uncompressed bit rate, as DisplayPort 1.4a uses DisplayPort Compression (DSC), which is virtually lossless and perfectly fine for gaming and general use.

As for the other connectivity options that separate the 321URX and the 322URX, MSI has upgraded the 2x USB-A ports to 5Gbps speeds, along with the USB Type-B port. Moreover, the USB-C port has been upgraded with more watts, jumping from 90W to 98W. The HDMI ports between the two displays are the same, both being HDMI 2.1 and support for 4K at 240Hz.

Panel Breakdown

The 322URX uses the same panel as the 321URX, which means we are getting the same pixel quality but only with a few subtle differences. Both of these panels are flat, use QD-OLED pixel technology, and have the same dimensions. However, when it comes to color accuracy, the 322URX has slightly better Adobe RGB performance. Both panels support the same DisplayHDR True Black 400 and have 10-bit color depth. Brightness is the same, and throughout my time testing both of these monitors, I didn't notice any differentiating factors that stood out when I was strictly looking at the panel.

But what is the panel powering the 322URX? It appears to be identical to the 321URX panel, which means it's a third-generation QD-OLED panel from Samsung. These panels made significant improvements over the second-generation panels, which were prone to several problems, such as text fringing.

The 322URX panel has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 across 32 inches, giving it 140 Pixels Per Inch (PPI), which is a 27% density increase compared to a 27-inch 2560 x 1440p display. A rule of thumb when it comes to gaming monitors is the higher the PPI, the sharper the image will be, which essentially means a better-looking image. This rule of thumb does operate on a bell curve, but it's generally accepted.

While text fringing was a problem on previous QD-OLED gaming monitors at this PPI, I don't believe it's an issue at all, making the 322URX totally suitable for word processing tasks such as writing this review, excel work, writing emails, and general web browsing. However, I would still recommend an IPS display to a user who is predominately using the display for word processing tasks, as text is just that tad clearer and easier on the eyes. But, if you are mostly using this display for gaming and flexing into light word-processing tasks for short periods of time, the 322URX will have no problems at all with the 322URX.

MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED Gaming Monitor Review - The New Peak of PC Gaming for $1299 44

An improvement over the 321URX is the anti-reflective coating MSI has used on the 322URX, while I'm not exactly sure what the improvement is as MSI hasn't specified it, it appears the reflections in the 322URX have been reduced, which was a problem I highlighted in my review of the 321URX. As with all QD-OLED panels, they are best used in a dark room with light sources placed behind the display, as direct light on the panel can cause the brightness of the dark pixels to appear lighter, effectively ruining the best part of the QD-OLED, the deep blacks.

To keep the monitor panel healthy for as long as possible, MSI has outfitted OSD options with an array of OLED Care options. These include: Pixel Shift, Panel Protect, Protect Notice, Static Screen Detection, Multi Logo Detection, Taskbar Detection, and Boundary Protection. I would recommend checking to see if these are turned on, as the 321URX had them disabled by default. In the case of the 322URX, they were switched on, but it may vary from model to model. These features are designed to mitigate the chance of any burn-in occurring, with Panel Protect being the main feature that can sometimes get in the way. Here's what happens.

After exceeding 16 hours of use, the Panel Protect notice will appear directly in the center of the screen and cannot be canceled by the user. The user has to execute the Panel Protect process, which turns the screen black for several minutes while the monitor carries out its pixel-cleaning routine. This feature is particularly annoying for power users, especially if the notice pops up during the middle of a competitive game. I have spoken with MSI about this problem, and they said development is currently underway with their software teams to come up with a workaround.

If you are still concerned about any burn-in occurring, MSI has slapped a three-year warranty on the 322URX, which is the same as the 321URX.

Performance

So, what is the gaming experience like on the 322URX? I'll give it to you short and simple - drool-worthy. Yes, that's right, you will drool when playing games on this monitor, and in some cases, I believe it's an involuntary reaction. I recognize this as a hyperbolic description of the gaming experience, but the statement has a lot of truth, as the 322URX gaming experience is next to none - just like the 321URX.

MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED Gaming Monitor Review - The New Peak of PC Gaming for $1299 46

At 32 inches, a 4K resolution, and a 240Hz refresh rate on a latest-generation QD-OLED panel, you are going to be pressed to find a game that doesn't look incredible on the 322URX. In every single game I tested, the 322URX made the game shine, with no downsides to report whatsoever. These are the games I tested: League of Legends, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Age of Mythology: Retold, Age of Empires IV, DOOM Eternal, God of War Ragnarok, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Helldivers 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth: Wukong, and Valorant.

The 322URX ate every single one of those titles up and spat out some of the best-looking in-game visuals I've seen on a gaming monitor. The real star of the show here when it comes to graphics is the deep blacks, which make every other color pop and have a high contrast, milky aesthetic to it.

This is all thanks to the QD-OLED panel, and titles where it was particularly more impressive than others were DOOM Eternal, where there is quite a lot of black but also a lot of fast-paced moving colors, Overwatch 2, which is by default a very vibrant game, and Cyberpunk 2077, which when paired with the ray-tracing features was some of the best in-game visuals I have seen on a display.

MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED Gaming Monitor Review - The New Peak of PC Gaming for $1299 47

The 322URX doesn't leave out competitor first-person shooter fanatics either, as the panel comes with a 0.03ms (GtG) response time, which is paired with a 240Hz refresh rate. Want to feel dangerous in your favorite first-person shooter? Get a monitor with a 0.03ms response time and a refresh rate above 144Hz. I can promise you that you won't want to go back. Titles such as Overwatch 2, Apex Legends, DOOM Eternal, and League of Legends all benefited immensely from those aforementioned specifications as they enabled me to quickly react to in-game events.

Ultimately, the 32-inch size, 4K @ 240Hz, and QD-OLED combination make for a gaming monitor that, in my books, is the peak PC gaming experience right now.

Final Thoughts

So, should you buy the MPG 322URX or the MPG 321URX? That depends on a few factors. Firstly, both of these monitors are extremely good displays, with very little if any deal-breaker faults. However, they are priced quite differently, with the MPG 322URX being $349 more than the MPG 321URX.

MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED Gaming Monitor Review - The New Peak of PC Gaming for $1299 48

A buyer that would be better off with the MPG 322URX would be someone who is planning to or already owns a latest-generation graphics card that is UHBR20 compatible and is also looking to future-proof themselves with better connectivity options. That is the main differentiating factor between these two displays.

The MPG 322URX is a revision of the MPG 321URX with an addition of UHBR20 and improved USB ports. So, with that in mind. If you want the best-of-the-best in order to future-proof yourself and already have or are getting the hardware to do it, spend that extra $349, as it will be worth it in the long run.

MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED Gaming Monitor Review - The New Peak of PC Gaming for $1299 49

However, if you are a gamer just looking to make the jump to 4K gaming and all you care about is the resolution and refresh rate, buy the 321URX as you will save $349. While the 321URX isn't the best-in-slot gaming monitor available, its main features are what you are after: 4K resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms response time, and a gorgeous QD-OLED panel.

The improved connectivity options on the 322URX, while attractive to some users, may just be extra bells and whistles that aren't worth the extra $349, and that is completely reasonable. Another factor to consider before making a purchase is what graphics card will be running the display, and making sure that card is able to fully take advantage of the MPG 322URX if you so choose that monitor, because if it can't, you will effectively be leaving $349 worth of features on the table.

Ultimately, both of these displays are incredible, with the MPG 322URX taking the crown as the new peak PC gaming monitor, but for a hefty price.
