TL;DR: A recompiled version of Bungie's Halo CE now runs across phones, PCs, and browsers, and players have tested a chaotic 64-player Blood Gulch match despite the map being designed for up to 16. The project showcases the game's lasting appeal, though online play has some rough edges.

Halo CE has been successfully reverse-engineered and is now playable on practically every device, including phones and even browsers. Now players have tested out the first 64-man battle at the infamous Blood Gulch.

Modders have been doing interesting things with Halo for years, but now the original Bungie-era OG shooter has essentially been rebuilt by talented programmers. This new recompiled version basically unshackles Halo from its confines and allows it to cross over to other devices like mobiles, and now players have successfully tested out Blood Gulch multiplayer with 64 players. Predictably, chaos ensues--the GOAT of CTF maps was created to support 16 players max.

Popular Now: New PS5 jailbreak means almost every console can now be unlocked, with one catch

The only other time I remember seeing something like this is when modded original Xbox consoles were in vogue; back then, the modded consoles would support larger multiplayer lobbies, even if the maps didn't support them, complete with extra vehicles and the like.

Playing the recompiled Halo CE with so many people via online multiplayer isn't super streamlined, and there's some jank, but ultimately it's a testament to what's possible when passion and dedication converge with fandom. It also highlights Halo CE's immortal status as one of the most influential video games of all time, and we could even see CE become a kind of modern day Doom of sorts--"does it run CE?" might become the new meme.

Story Q&A

Powered by TweakBot

From TweakTown's coverage of this story.

How does 64-player Blood Gulch affect Halo CE's performance and online stability?

How do Halo CE's controls on phones compare with its controls on PCs?

The recompiled Halo CE is playable on both phones and PCs. The story does not describe the controls on either device, so it does not establish how they compare.

How does the Halo CE recompile differ in scope from Halo Campaign Evolved?

The Halo CE recompile rebuilds Bungie's original game for devices including phones and browsers, and players have tested 64-player Blood Gulch multiplayer. Halo Campaign Evolved is a separate remake: "Halo Campaign Evolved offers fans a fresh start with new content and major level redesigns, including The Library" reports new content and substantial changes to campaign levels.

What is the legal status of the Halo CE decomp-recomp project, and has Microsoft responded?

Want something else? Ask TweakBot.

Since this is a decomp-recomp, it's unlikely that Microsoft will take action to get the project shut down...even if it's stealing the thunder from the now-months-old Halo Campaign Evolved remake.
