'PS5 is currently the Call of Duty box,' analyst says after Black Ops II re-release takes over PlayStation 1

A PS3-era game has taken over PlayStation. Activision and Xbox recently had the brilliant plan to re-release the original Black Ops and Black Ops II games onto the PS4 and PS5. These games had previously been stuck on the PS3 for over a decade, and the new release is actually a straight port of the classic released in 2012. New data figures show that the plan has worked incredibly well; Black Ops II has successfully captured the PS Network.

Circana's Mat Piscatella recently shared a look at weekly active users (WAUs) data for PlayStation games in the US. Black Ops II was at the top of the charts, and Piscatella also notes that three separate Call of Duty games reached the Top 10.

"PlayStation 5 is currently the Call of Duty box. What a world," the Circana senior director said on BlueSky.

"Seems like updated old games may be what the mass market really wants to play on consoles these days."

Call of Duty remains one of the largest video game franchises on the market with lifetime revenues in excess of $35 billion, and it's likely that the Black Ops re-releases will help tack on many millions of dollars in sales at a critical juncture. Grand Theft Auto VI is coming in November and is expected to push hard against Modern Warfare 4's release, and it's possible the Black Ops re-release duo will help make up for any sales and/or microtransaction earnings impacts from GTA VI, despite Rockstar's game releasing weeks after MW4.
