PS Vita, PS3 stores go offline starting August 2026

Sony is pulling the plug on PS3 and PS Vita storefronts starting next month as the company lays out plans for the PS6.

Sony made two bombshell announcements today: First, Sony confirmed that they would stop making physical PlayStation game discs for new games starting in 2028. The second bit of news concerns legacy hardware like the PS3 and Vita.

The company has confirmed that these older systems will be disconnected from the PS Store as soon as next month--starting in August, PS3 and PS Vita will lose PS Store access across Central America. All other global regions will lose access in July 2027, Sony has confirmed.

• Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua - PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
• Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries - PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
• In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required.

As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.

This decision sets Sony up to support the PS4, PS5, and upcoming PlayStation 6 generations. Multiple high-profile live service games have already moved on from the PlayStation 4, with titles like Genshin Impact and Call of Duty Warzone.

Interestingly enough, Microsoft and Activision plan to re-release PS3-era Call of Duty games onto both the PS4 and PS5.
