Square Enix today announced that development of Dragon Quest XII has been restarted with a fresh new narrative, characters, and overall visual style. Popular Now: Modders upgrade the original PlayStation's RAM from 2MB to 16MB"The game has gone in a different direction to the one we originally announced, but I think you're going to love it," said Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams game designer Yuji Horii. The designer also confirmed that Beyond Dreams would also use Akira Toriyama's characters and Koichi Sugiyama's music, like every other Dragon Quest game before it.
"It's the story of a young hero who's beset by strange visions in their sleep. What lies beyond dreams? Surely not a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future."

Executive producer Yosuke Saito explains the situation leading up to the game's overhaul, and it sounds like the creative teams disagreed with the darker and more malevolent design of the original Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate.
"We're hard at work on Dragon Quest XII, but due to a reshuffle of the team and a restart of development, it's going tob e a bit longer till it's in your hands.
"Work on the original version, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, hit a lot of hurdles along the way. But as we kept talking with Mr. Horii and pinned down what a mainline Dragon Quest game should look like, we decided to move things around and start over from scratch.
"It was a major decision, but I believe it was the right one to ensure the next Dragon Quest game will be the one that all you fans of the series will really love."
Saito also says that Square Enix will innovate with DQXII, adding in various new features and content that have never been seen before in a Dragon Quest game.
No release date or even release window were announced for the game.
