TL;DR: Microsoft counters Apple's $599 MacBook Neo with a College Offer bundle including discounted Windows laptops, 12 months of Microsoft 365 Premium, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for new subscribers, and a customizable Xbox controller. The deal targets students but may have limited appeal due to existing college software access and performance differences.

Apple's $599 MacBook Neo ($499 for students) has sent shockwaves through the budget laptop segment, and Microsoft is the first to respond. The company has announced a new "Microsoft College Offer," a bundle that gives students Microsoft 365 Premium, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a custom Xbox controller, and a discounted laptop, potentially aimed at swaying students away from Apple's highlight.

As announced in a blog post and spotted by The Verge, students can choose a qualifying Windows PC from top makers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Surface devices, including the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, are also getting discounted, despite Microsoft recently hiking prices on those same models. The bundle includes the following for US students with an eligible PC purchase:

  • 12 months of Microsoft 365 Premium: Access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more, with CoPilot built in for AI assistance
  • 12 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Access to a library of hundreds of games, including new games on day one like Forza Horizon 6 and Fable, that you can play on PC, Xbox, and more devices with unlimited cloud gaming.
  • A free Xbox Wireless Controller: Design your own controller to personalize your gaming setup with custom colors.

The laptop deals include a 15.3-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x for $499 at Best Buy, about $250 off its usual $750 price, and a 16-inch HP OmniBook 3 for $429 at Walmart, a $270 discount off its usual $699 price. Other retailers have similar deals.

A discounted laptop is appreciated, but the rest of the package is where the value gets harder to pin down. A yearly Microsoft 365 Premium subscription, which normally runs $200, is useful, though many colleges already provide free access to Microsoft apps, so you may not need it. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a solid addition, but it's only available to new subscribers, excluding those with existing subscriptions. That leaves the free custom Xbox controller as the most straightforward bonus of the bunch, worth around $76.

And let's not forget the performance difference between these Windows PCs and the MacBook Neo. We will likely see more attempts by budget laptop manufacturers to push Apple's offering aside, but for now, we don't think a discounted laptop and a bunch of free services will do the job.

The Microsoft College Offer is available to students from April 15 through June 30, 2026, with full bundle redemption required by July 31, 2026. Students will need to verify their academic status with a .edu email address, create a Microsoft account, and follow the steps provided after purchase.
