TL;DR: A modder using Unreal Engine 5 created a first-person Diablo 2 concept showcasing immersive action and sorceress abilities in 3D, but cannot release it due to IP restrictions. The project aims to inspire Blizzard to develop an official first-person Diablo game, while Diablo 2 receives new expansions like Rise of the Warlock.

A modder and game maker wants to answer a question that has plagued PC gamers since the early 2000s: What would Diablo 2 be like with a first-person view like Elder Scrolls?

Diablo 2 as an FPS is surprisingly smooth--that is, if it's built by a skilled digital artisan with Unreal Engine 5's toolkit. YouTube creator and UE5 whiz I Make Games has released new gameplay footage for a side project meant to drum up interest for some kind of first-person, action-adventure Diablo game.

The result is an interesting look at a potential spin-off for the franchise, one that's more focused on in-your-face action similar to Skyrim. The Forgotten Tower has never seemed so dark and ominous, with the fallen clan goat men crowding the screen. The animations also show what sorceress abilities like ice blast and blizzard would be like in a dungeon-crawling 3D environment.

"I thought I'd share a preview of what I've been working on over the past two weeks. This is still just an early concept and isn't finished or polished. The goal is simply to demonstrate what the game could look and feel like at a very basic level," I Make Games said.

Sadly, the YouTuber has no plans to actually release any kind of playable build due to IP rights issues. We've seen groups like Daybreak Games take modders who were accepting donations to court--and win.

"I can't legally release a Diablo game, pretty much ever," I Make Games clarified in a separate video.

"There's a couple of things we can sort of do here, and I think the first one would be is that we keep this a fun, fan-made project. I keep building systems, you keep giving me feedback, and we could sort of recreate what the game would look like from this perspective.

"Hopefully, Blizzard will see there's a market for this and then they'll create their version of this game, and everyone wins."

Blizzard hasn't completely given up on Diablo 2, having released its first new expansion in 25 years with the Rise of the Warlock update.
