TL;DR: The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, developed with Unreal Engine 5, is a top-selling success highlighting strong demand for Elder Scrolls games. Meanwhile, the fan-made Skywind mod recreates Morrowind in Skyrim's engine with full voice acting and updated visuals, promising a modernized classic experience before Elder Scrolls 6's release.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has been a massive success for Bethesda Game Studios and Xbox, quickly becoming one of the year's best-selling games. The visually impressive remaster (developed using Unreal Engine 5) doubles as a friendly reminder that gamers are hungry for Elder Scrolls titles and that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a Cyberpunk 2077 or GTA 6-style event when it launches.

However, that could be several years away. So, if you've been enjoying Oblivion Remastered's old-school RPG charm, there's another upcoming Elder Scrolls release called Skywind. This ambitious mod project is a labor of love from a large team of passionate fans recreating and remaking The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind within the Skyrim engine. This includes all locations, NPCs, quests, and more, fully voiced with new visuals and animation.

We've been following this project for years, and the Skywind team has just released a new video showcasing around 20 minutes of gameplay and providing an update on the game's development status.

Morrowind, which dates back to the original Xbox era, was the first Elder Scrolls title to offer a massive open world to explore. Unlike Oblivion and Skyrim, it didn't include voice acting; instead, players simply read through massive walls of text. One of the most impressive features of Skywind, outside of the visual overhaul, is that every character is voiced, and even the soundtrack has been re-recorded and expanded upon to bring its presentation up to speed, namely, in line with Skyrim.

The gameplay video showcases a quest playthrough, with the character visiting multiple locations and engaging with enemies and NPCs. From what we can see, it's a great blend of Morrowind's original look and feel with Skyrim's more modern combat and streamlined UI. We even get to see Mark and Recall spells, as, unlike Oblivion, Morrowind didn't feature a Fast Travel system. You had to use magic or take a ride on a large bug.

Unfortunately, as polished and impressive as this gameplay slice looks, the end of the video outlines a long list of things that still need work, as well as a call for volunteers to help with 3D modelling, localization, and more. There's no expected or planned release date or window, but odds are it will arrive long before The Elder Scrolls 6.
