TL;DR: ConcernedApe, creator of Stardew Valley, plans to eventually develop Stardew Valley 2 but prefers releasing free updates to the original game due to ease and existing systems. Currently focused on Haunted Chocolatier, he prioritizes creative passion over profit and will return to Stardew Valley after.

ConcernedApe, the creator of Stardew Valley, has said during a recent podcast that he may eventually make Stardew Valley 2, but he prefers putting out free updates to the original game.

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone recently appeared in an episode of Bobby Lee's Tiger Belly podcast, where he said that sometime in the future, he will "eventually make a Stardew Valley 2," but prefers putting out free updates to the original Stardew Valley because it's "easier."

Currently, Barone is taking a break from the farming simulator as he is working on his new game, Haunted Chocolatier, with the developer saying that he will return to Stardew Valley at some point after years of supporting Haunted Chocolatier.

With the popularity of Stardew Valley, announcing a sequel would certainly generate some attention, and as a result, a big paycheck for Barone. However, the developer explains that money isn't a motivator for him, saying, "I just don't care. I just don't care about that much, to be honest."

"It's just so much easier to just add more stuff to Stardew Valley than to make a whole new game from scratch," the game developer explained. "The major systems are already all done. That's the stuff that's not fun to do. When I make an update, it's like, you know - 'oh, throw in this, throw in that. Let's add green rain.'"
