Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has announced that Fortnite will return to the US-based iOS App Store next week, with the Unreal Engine creator also putting forward a "peace proposal" to Apple at the same time.
Sweeney posted on X, saying: "We will return Fortnite to the US iOS App Store next week. Epic puts forth a peace proposal: If Apple extends the court's friction-free, Apple-tax-free framework worldwide, we'll return Fortnite to the App Store worldwide and drop current and future litigation on the topic".
This comment was in a reply to a post on X a couple of hours ago, where Sweeney said: "NO FEES on web transactions. Game over for the Apple Tax. Apple's 15-30% junk fees are now just as dead here in the United States of America as they are in Europe under the Digital Markets Act. Unlawful here, unlawful there. 4 years 4 months 17 days".
The original post from Sweeney reads: "Northern District of California court has ruled on the Epic v Apple anti-steering injunction's contempt of court proceeding! Details incoming!"
This all started back in August 2020 when Fortnite was booted off of iOS in the United States, when Apple wasn't happy with Epic using its own in-game payment system, which is a violation of Apple's rules. For the last 5 years, the two companies have been in a mighty legal battle, including a ruling that was more in Apple's favor in 2021, but today Epic Games gets the Victory Royale.
We should expect to see Fortnite return to iOS devices next week in the US!
