TL;DR: The Nintendo Switch 2, launching June 5, features 256GB of faster internal storage compared to the original's 32GB. First-party games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza have modest storage needs, but third-party titles like Cyberpunk 2077 may require more space, potentially necessitating additional storage solutions.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 launching with 256GB of internal storage, which will also be notably faster than the 32GB found in the original non-OLED edition, many have been wondering if it will be enough to store a bunch of games on day one, delaying the need to rush out and buy a pricey microSD Express card with 512GB or 1TB of expanded storage.

Donkey Kong Bananza's install size is only 10GB on the Switch 2.

With the Japanese My Nintendo Store now listing Switch 2 games, it's also listing each game's installation size. The good news is that first-party Nintendo games look pretty conservative in their storage requirements, with Mario Kart World being the biggest launch-window game from Nintendo. Its 23.4GB size would only take up roughly 10% of the 256GB available - not counting system files.

Donkey Kong Bananza, the latest game from the talented Super Mario Odyssey team, weighs in at only 10GG - half the size of the flagship Mario Kart World. Nintendo's My Nintendo Store lists the storage requirements for a couple of enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition titles and the classic GameCube games pack for Nintendo Switch Online.

Super Mario Party Jamboree: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is 7.7GB, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Switch 2 Edition is 5.7 GB. The Nintendo GameCube launch line-up of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soul Calibur 2 will take up 3.5GB of storage.

Of course, the story will change with third-party titles, like Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt RED's sprawling futuristic open-world title is set to ship on a 64GB Game Card, which means the downloadable version will require up to 64GB, 25% of the Switch 2's 256GB of internal storage.
