Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for August 4, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Aug 4, 2008 at 12:54 am CDT

It's a brand new week and as we normally do, let's take a look at the Blu-ray awesomeness (or non-awesomeness as the case may be) that will be coming our way this week:

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment:

Juno

Stargate: Continuum

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:

Reservoir Dogs

StarShip Troopers 3: Marauder

Vantage Point

Young Guns

Roadshow Home Entertainment:

Semi-Pro

Probably the pick of the week would be Reservoir Dogs. It's slightly overrated but worthy of a purchase in my books.

Until next week...

Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for July 27, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Jul 27, 2008 at 06:42 pm CDT

You may have noticed the lack of Blu-ray release updates last week. There was of course a reason for this. There were no new Blu-ray releases last week. Fortunately though, that will probably be the last week for the year where there are no new releases.

So, as we normally do, let's take a look at the Blu-ray awesomeness (or non-awesomeness as the case may be) that will be coming our way this week:

Sony BMG:

Where The Light Is - John Mayer Live In Los Angeles

Toto: Live In Amsterdam

Paramount Home Entertainment:

Cloverfield

No Country For Old Men

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Not a bad little batch. Cloverfield is definitely worth a watch, and works better on a small screen that it did in the cinemas.

Until next week...

This Weeks Blu-ray Releases 1215997861

Ben Gourlay | Jul 13, 2008 at 08:11 pm CDT

Let's take a look at the Blu-ray awesomeness (or non-awesomeness as the case may be) that will be coming our way this week:

Beyond Home Entertainment:

Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics

The bad news is there are no new movies due out this week. However, the good news is that you can purchase Digital Video Essentials, and get your display up to scratch for the huge array of Blu-rays due out in the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2008!

I've requested a copy of Digital Video Essentials for review on TweakTown, so hopefully that will arrive soon.

Until next week...

Sony DADC To Begin Blu-ray Manufacturing In Sydney

Ben Gourlay | Jul 13, 2008 at 01:34 am CDT

On Tuesday at a Blu-ray Disc Association conference in Beijing, it was announced that the Sony DADC disc replication facility in Sydney would be recieving a substantial floorspace expansion, which will enable the facility to manufacture Blu-ray discs. The production aim will be set at 1,000,000 units per month by February next 2009. Sony DADC Sydney have replicated DVD discs from the earliest stages of the format in 1998.

This will lighten the load on loaded Blu-ray manufacturing lines worldwide which have reached stretching point, leading to staggered release dates and limited numbers.

First Set-Top Blu-ray Recorder Hits Australia

Ben Gourlay | Jun 11, 2008 at 06:11 am CDT

Now that my Computex spanning embargo has lifted; back to some Blu-ray news!

Panasonic have announced that Australian stores should now have in stock the DMR-BW500. Uninspiring model number I know.
What is inspiring, however, is that this marks the first Blu-ray recorder to be released outside of Japan. Even better is the price: $2,299 AUD. A lot of money to be sure, but lower than the first DVD recorder to hit the Australian market in late 2000; they started at $6,499!

I have been hassling Panasonic for a review unit for a TweakTown first look, but so far unsuccessful. Of course, persistence is a trait of mine...

For now, take a gander at this mechanical beastie.

Transformers Blu-ray - It's Official

Ben Gourlay | May 29, 2008 at 02:43 am CDT

Paramount Home Entertainment U.S. have announced full details for the Blu-ray edition of Transformers. The 2 disc release, which hits US stores on September 2nd, will be a mirror of the previously released HD-DVD disc, but adds on an uncompressed PCM audio track (instead of the lossy Dolby Digital soundtrack on the HD-DVD) and a new video encode, supervised by Michael Bay himself, which takes full advantage of the higher bitrates available on Blu-ray. The disc will also utilise BD Live!, but without specifics.

Paramount Home Entertainment Australia have yet to make a similar announcement, but they would be crazy to miss the Christmas window.
