Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for September 15, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Sep 15, 2008 at 03:24 am CDT

A few hours later than normal (sorry 'bout that folks), lets take a look at what will be coming our way this week.

Sony BMG:

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions band: Live in Dublin

Foo Fighters - Live At Wembley Stadium

Beyond Home Entertainment:

HDScape - Exotic Saltwater Aquarium

HDScape - Fireplace: Visions of Tranquility

HDScape - Hawaii

HDScape - The Great Southwest

HDScape - Visions of the Sea: Explorations

Pick of the week? I'd probably go with the Foo; so long as it has some form of lossless audio.

Until next week...

Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for September 7, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Sep 7, 2008 at 07:08 pm CDT

Another Monday passes on by, so let's take a look at what will be coming our way this week.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment:

One Missed Call

Deliverance

10,000 BC

Disney Home Entertainment:

Gone Baby Gone

Quite a mixed bag of new cack and classics. For this weeks pick, I will go with 10,000 BC. By all accounts its a completely rubbish movie, but has a great video and audio track. It's always the way, isn't it?

Until next week...

Disney Announce Major Classics For Blu-ray

Ben Gourlay | Sep 4, 2008 at 03:38 am CDT

Classic Disney Blu-ray

Giving Blu-ray software a massive shot in the arm, our friend Bill over at The Digital Bits, has posted an announcement by Disney Home Entertainment of intention to release an additional five animated classics which will make their Blu-ray debut over the next two years.

The five films, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Fantasia and its sequel Fantasia 2000, will be released two a year finishing pre Christmas 2010.

In addition to this Octobers release of Sleeping Beauty, this represents a fairly large leap of faith for Disney in relatively new technology.

Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for September 1, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Sep 1, 2008 at 01:23 am CDT

Firmly in the 'better than no releases at all column', let's take a look at what will be coming our way this week.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment:

The Scorpion King 2

Paramount Home Entertainment:

Drillbit Taylor

So out of either titles, neither of which am I 'chomping at the bit for' what must one choose as the stand out title of the week? I'd probably have to go for Drillbit Taylor It could be funny. Also might not be.

Until next week...

Pioneer Announce BDP-09FD - 20kg Of Blu-ray Bliss

Ben Gourlay | Aug 27, 2008 at 01:17 am CDT

Just when you thought that the almighty PlayStation 3 was the be all and end all of Blu-ray playback, Pioneer via Gizmodo have announced a Blu-ray player so elite that even elitists will be impressed.

Pionner BDP-09FD

The BDP-09FD, the hulking 20kg behemoth (yes you read that right), packs in the highest end materials aimed at all the audiophiles out there whom have nightmares of jittery, noise filled audio signals found in lesser quality components. If you salivate at the idea of separate digital to analog converters for each channel of sound, this player is aimed at you.

This machine really will be a sight to behold, but Pioneer Australia have yet to announce whether or not it will be hitting our shores, and even if it does it will likely retail at the $4000 AUD price range. The only thing missing is an ivory front. Maybe that will come in the BDP-10FD?

Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for August 24, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Aug 24, 2008 at 06:34 pm CDT

After my absence last week (don't blame me - there was no new releases last week), so begins another week, and another batch of Blu-ray titles comes our way:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:
In The Line of Fire
Maximum Risk
The Professionals
XXX 2 - The Next Level
Urban Legend
Prom Night

So in a week of general mediocrity, what must one choose as the stand out title of the week? I'd probably have to go for In The Line of Fire, which I reviewed here a few weeks ago.

Until next week...

Casino

Universal Home Entertainment in the U.S. have announced the Blu-ray release of Martin Scorcese's 1995 classic Casino. The release will feature 1080p VC-1 encoded video and DTS HD Master audio. The release should feature all the supplements from previous DVD and HD-DVD releases, in addition to a brand new U-Control, picture in picture experience.

Amazon.com Launches 30% Off All Blu-ray Sale

Ben Gourlay | Aug 22, 2008 at 07:29 am CDT

The universe's largest online retailer, and Jeff Bezos' baby Amazon has today launched a massive sale, slashing 30% off the entire range of Blu-rays, with some at an even larger 50% discount.

Those new to Blu-ray wanting to beef up their collection, now seems like a better time than ever to do so, however, before jumping in, remember the region coding issue that I have been writing about of late, so be sure to check The Blu-ray Region Code Info Page, before impulse buying everything in sight.

Ben Gourlay | Aug 21, 2008 at 03:43 am CDT

The digital TV tuner add-on for the PlayStation 3 has been a long time coming, originally scheduled to be released this time last year, but its finally been released in the PAL European market.

The aptly named Cool Stuff got their hands on the finished product, and unbox it for your viewing pleasure, along with a quick review.

PlayTV with open box shock

The USB add on allows the PlayStation 3 to recieve DTV transmissions, with twin HD tuners and record to the in-built PlayStation 3 hard drive.

The unit will be on sale through Europe next week, and will hit the Australian market early in 2009. The unit will not be available in the American market due to differing digital TV standards.

Australian Blu-ray Releases For This Week for August 10, 2008

Ben Gourlay | Aug 10, 2008 at 06:43 pm CDT

It seems that the older I get, the faster the weeks fly by. So let's take a look at the Blu-ray awesomeness (or non-awesomeness as the case may be) that will be coming our way this week:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment:

Batman Begins: Collectors Giftset

Magnum Force

Disney Home Entertainment:

There Will Be Blood

National Treasure 2 - Book Of Secrets

The Sixth Sense

Pick of the week? Batman Begins.

Two curiousities with the Warner releases: First; we have two releases from the Dirty Harry series, but not the original. Second; we finally get Batman Begins, but only in the 'gift set' variety for $49.95 and not disc only.

Until next week...
