Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 2 was released in 1999, and although that was the era of early 3D gaming, its top-down presentation set the tone for the game-changing open-world action of Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001. The GTA series has seen a few impressive RTX Remix mods and projects over the past couple of years, but seeing GTA 2 with full path-traced lighting is an impressive achievement.
Created by modder gebdag, GTA 2 RTX Remix translates all existing light sources in the game, while generating new ones for explosions, gunfire, and other effects, into RTX Remix's path-traced solution. As GeForce's Jacob Freeman showed on social media, this new lighting is transformative and includes a dynamic time-of-day system.

And because RTX Remix only supports games that use at least DirectX 9, the modder had to create a custom wrapper to translate the game's rendering calls so RTX Remix could read them properly.
NVIDIA's RTX Remix has seen several impressive mods that can be viewed as remasters, since it replaces a game's original rendering with full path-traced lighting and lets you replace and update assets. GTA 2 RTX Remix is a mod that requires a PC copy of GTA 2 (which Rockstar released as freeware back in 2004) and the community-built Remix Plus 1.5.1 for the day-night system.

In addition to the revamped lighting, this mod updates the game's presentation from the old-school 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9. And since the original game was locked to 25 or 30 FPS, the mod uses DLSS Frame Generation to run the path-traced version at a smooth 60 FPS.
