Thermal Grizzly has added AMD's Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 to its lineup of pre-delidded processors. The CPU is listed on the company's website for $1,402.83 including VAT, which is over $500 more than AMD's $899 MSRP for the standard chip.

Delidding removes the CPU's integrated heatspreader so a cooler can make direct contact with the silicon underneath. It typically improves temperatures and can help with overclocking, but the process is risky and voids AMD's warranty. That's where Thermal Grizzly comes in, since it backs every delidded CPU it sells with its own coverage instead, good for up to 24 months.

Apparently, each unit goes through cleaning and functional testing after delidding. Thermal Grizzly includes a USB stick with a screenshot of the temperature test results and a microscope image of the die.

There's an important catch, though. The original AMD heatspreader ships in the box, but Thermal Grizzly is adamant that it should never be reinstalled. According to the company, thermal paste or liquid metal can't fully bridge the height gap between the chiplets and the stock heatspreader once it's off.

Forcing it back on risks damaging the CPU and voiding the warranty entirely. It's also not compatible with AMD's own Direct Die Frames, so buyers are locked into Thermal Grizzly's own cooling ecosystem, like the Mycro Direct-Die or Mycro Direct-Die Pro.

The 9950X3D2 itself is AMD's dual 3D V-Cache flagship, packing 16 cores, 32 threads, and 192MB of L3 cache across both CCDs. It's a hot chip by design, so the appeal of direct-die cooling makes some sense here. Paying over 50% more than retail for it, however, is a tougher sell.

This isn't Thermal Grizzly's first delidded AMD chip either. The company previously launched a delidded Ryzen 9 9800X3D with similar warranty terms, so this looks like a continuation of that same program rather than a one-off release.
