Twitch has added a new feature that automatically opts streamers into generative AI training, allowing all channel content like streams, clips, and even user chats to be used for AI training.

Twitch and Amazon are facing strong backlash from the gaming community due to their new controversial use of AI tech. Amazon is using Twitch to train generative AI based off of user-created content, including streams, videos, and live viewer chat interactions. It's an opt-out feature, meaning it's on by default and streamers have to go into Twitch settings and opt out.
"Your stream and the stream's chat, your VODs, your Clips, Highlights, and any text or images on your Channel may be used," Twitch says.
As for an explanation on why this is happening, Twitch chief product officer Mike Minton gave a frank response:
"There's an honest answer, one I think most of you could probably appreciate: if it was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That's honestly the answer," Minton said in a recent stream.
"I know that this is not a fan favorite, I know that this is upsetting to the community, but this is where we are."
"There's an honest answer, one I think most of you could probably appreciate: if it was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That's honestly the answer. It's going to be on by default and almost every content service is on by default, I think the thing we're doing here that is unique and different is respecting your wishes to opt out of model training."
There's more; Twitter community notes clarify that the setting is not universal on a user level. This means that even if you have AI training turned off for your stream, your chat sessions will still be used for training if you join another streamer's chat who has not opted out.
"If you chat on someone else's stream, their opt-out preferences govern if that chat can be used for training," Twitch notes in its help section.
