TL;DR: A homebrew developer, Day-OS, created GreenVita, a native Rust app that streams Xbox Cloud Gaming to a hacked 2011 PS Vita by using the Vita's H.264 decoder and Wi‑Fi to receive video/audio and send inputs. It requires homebrew-enabled Vita, VitaShell, Unsafe Homebrew, and uses touch zones for missing buttons; performance varies due to 2.4GHz Wi‑Fi and the project remains early-stage.

Gaming handhelds are all the rage nowadays, but what if I told you a 15-year-old handheld can still play modern games? A homebrew developer has found a way to stream Xbox Cloud Gaming through Sony's discontinued PlayStation Vita, turning a 2011 handheld into an unlikely way to play modern Xbox titles.

The project is called GreenVita, built by a developer known as Day-OS. It's apparently not emulating any Xbox hardware at all. The Vita just receives video and audio from Microsoft's cloud servers and sends controller input back over Wi-Fi, the same way any other Xbox Cloud Gaming device works.

Under the hood, GreenVita is a native Rust application rather than something running through the Vita's browser, and it uses egui and SDL2 for its interface while leaning on the handheld's hardware H.264 decoder to process the incoming stream.

Getting this running isn't something you can do on a stock Vita. It reportedly requires a homebrew-enabled system with VitaShell installed, along with Unsafe Homebrew turned on in HENkaku settings so GreenVita can access the video decoder module. From there, users sign into a Microsoft account through a device code on a separate device.

It looks like Game Pass Ultimate isn't strictly required either, since Microsoft offers cloud access through multiple Game Pass tiers, and some free-to-play titles apparently only need a basic Microsoft account.

Since the Vita never shipped with L2, R2, L3, or R3 buttons, GreenVita maps those inputs to four zones on the rear touch panel, with additional auxiliary controls available through the front touchscreen.

As for how well it actually runs, that seems to depend heavily on the Vita's aging Wi-Fi hardware, which caps out at 2.4GHz. That's going to be more prone to interference than anything on 5GHz or Wi-Fi 6, so dropped frames and the occasional black screen still show up. Recent updates have reportedly cut down on those issues and made the whole experience noticeably smoother, though this is still an early-stage homebrew project rather than a polished product.

Of course, this isn't exactly plug-and-play for the average person. You'd need a Vita that's already been modded for homebrew, some comfort installing unofficial software, and patience for a project that's still being actively worked on.
