The market for motherboards with backside connectors is small, but for users looking to assemble a build to be shown off, they are instantly appealing. Hiding ugly cables makes a build look better, and a lovely-looking white build with tasteful RGB lighting looks even better again.
The GIGABYTE B850M AORUS Stealth Ice is a new release. It doesn't have a direct predecessor, but it does include an updated 2026 feature set. It has 5G LAN, Wi-Fi 7, X3D Turbo Mode support, DIY-friendly features, and a 64MB BIOS with an integrated Wi-Fi driver. The larger BIOS ROM is poised to add support for upcoming Zen 6 CPUs, giving buyers an appealing upgrade path.

The B850M AORUS Stealth Ice is a Micro-ATX board with one of the cleanest designs you will ever see. It features a nearly all-white design with hints of brushed metal. Of course, it's a board with backside connectors, meaning a complete build will be almost completely free of clutter, with only a GPU power cable and AIO tubing remaining apparent. GIGABYTE really toned down the branding, emphasizing the board's stealth theme.

The small metal panel on the right is purely aesthetic. There's a bank of RGB LEDs under it. There are three ARGB headers and a single 12V RGB header. A lovely white board like this is inherently suited to a resplendent RGB build. It'll be easy to create your own lighting theme. Do show it off in a windowed case!

All of the connectors are on the rear of the board. This is a 'reverse' picture, so commonly positioned connectors such as the 24-pin ATX connector and SATA ports are located in the same place as they would be on a standard board, just on the other side of the PCB.
The board includes several USB headers, supporting up to four USB 2.0 ports, two 5Gbps ports, and a single Type-C 10Gbps port. Sadly, it lacks a 20Gbps port and USB PD support.
You get just four fan headers - a notably low amount, so you'll likely need splitter cables to accommodate a multi-fan AIO and case fans at the same time. The PCB doesn't include power and reset buttons, since they're located on the back panel.
The board includes a backplate, but it's only for aesthetic purposes. I'd rather it included thermal pads to help cool the rear of the VRM, as most backplates tend to do.

Four DIMM slots support DDR5 speeds up to 8200+. It hardly makes sense for GIGABYTE to waste time validating higher memory speeds given the ongoing ramageddon. Since the launch of AM5, AMD has consistently recommended memory speeds in the 6000-6400 MT/s range in 1:1 mode for the best balance of speed, latency, and compatibility. Zen 6 is expected to support CUDIMMs, and higher speeds may be officially supported later.

The B850M AORUS Stealth Ice features a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot. The lower x16 slot is wired to the chipset and supports PCIe 4.0 x4 electrically. The layout is as good as you can expect from a Micro-ATX board.
The board includes three M.2 slots. The primary slot supports PCIe 5.0 and includes an underside thermal pad. The other two slots are connected to the chipset and support PCIe 4.0.
With just three M.2 slots and no bandwidth-hungry USB controllers, the board avoids lane-sharing compromises, so feel free to fully populate it.

I've been a fan of GIGABYTE's M.2 coolers for several years, but the primary heatsink included with the B850M AORUS Stealth is a real letdown. It is tiny. If you didn't buy this board for its ultra-clean and stealthy aesthetic, I would ditch it in favor of an SSD with an integrated heatsink. I hope GIGABYTE reverses course when it releases next-generation motherboards. At least it's easy to remove and reattach.
The larger plate cools the other two SSDs. Compare the sheer size difference and surface area of the two! It also features a simple retention mechanism.

The B850M AORUS Stealth Ice features an 8+2+2-phase VRM with 60A stages. It's adequate for a mid-range board. It handled our Ryzen 9 9950X with headroom to spare, and it'll handle a high-core-count Zen 6 chip too. Though I wouldn't recommend it for much more PBO or Turbo Mode auto overclocking
The board's heatsinks have a reasonable surface area, though it lacks a heatpipe. As long as you have adequate case airflow, they are sufficient. We don't expect it to match or beat boards costing twice as much.

The rear I/O of the B850M AORUS Stealth Ice is quite good, though a 20Gbps USB port would be welcome at this price. The USB complement includes two 10Gbps ports, one of which is Type-C. Next up are four 5Gbps ports and four USB 2.0 ports. That gives 10 in total.
A Realtek RTL8126 controller adds 5G LAN support. 5G is rapidly trickling down to the budget end of the market. A Realtek RTL8922AE Wi-Fi 7 controller supports 160MHz connections only.
Next are the audio ports, which consist of 3.5mm line-in and line-out ports and S/PDIF. A Realtek ALC1220 codec drives these. GIGABYTE added some specialized capacitors, but it's just a par implementation.
The board includes CMOS clear and BIOS flashback buttons. The latter will be critical for users buying this board when Zen 6 is released. You also get power and reset buttons. Placing them here is logical for a backside connector board. They're much easier to access here.
DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 ports provide dual-monitor support for those planning to use integrated graphics.

GIGABYTE's Ice-themed BIOS is particularly easy on the eyes. The fonts and design look really classy. The Easy Mode page provides all the options a novice user will need, including XMP/EXPO switching, fan controls, boot priority, and BIOS flashing.
Like nearly all 2026 X870 and B850 releases, the B850 AORUS Stealth Ice includes a 64MB BIOS ROM. That means it will support Zen 6 and maybe even Zen 7 CPUs. It includes a Wi-Fi driver, giving instant Wi-Fi access after Windows installation.
The Advanced pages retain the familiar GIGABYTE layout. I wouldn't recommend thrashing a 9950X at high power with the board, but simpler PBO or X3D Turbo Mode won't be a problem. Notably, the B850M AORUS Stealth Ice doesn't support Turbo Mode 2.0.
The fan controls work very well in practice, providing up to seven adjustment points.

Cinebench 2024
Cinebench 2024 is a reliable, widely used benchmark that measures both single- and multi-threaded performance. Note that all our benchmark testing used the latest available Windows updates.

The B850M AORUS Stealth Ice starts strong, taking the top spot with our test configuration.
Blender
A rendering application like Blender is just one of many reasons a user might consider a high-core-count CPU, such as the Ryzen 9 9950X. We use the Whitelands demo file and record how long it takes to render the image.

A result of 429 seconds isn't bad at all. A couple of seconds over the duration of a seven-minute test is negligible.
Handbrake
Handbrake is a simple-to-use video encoding and transcoding application. Here, we convert a 4K movie trailer to 1080p. The results below show the average FPS. A higher result indicates the task will take less time to complete.

It looks like the B850M AORUS Stealth Ice likes heavily threaded loads.
Benchmarks - File Compression and Memory Latency
7Zip
7Zip is a commonly used free file compression and decompression app. It's very sensitive to changes in memory speed and latency, and scales with the number of CPU threads.

It's gold and silver for GIGABYTE in the 7zip test.
AIDA64 Memory Latency
Memory latency has been an area where Intel has traditionally held an advantage. Chiplet architectures inevitably add some latency compared to monolithic chips. The real-world benefits aren't that important, though.

71.4 nanoseconds fractionally behind the leaders; that's if you care about a nanosecond or 2.
Benchmarks - 3DMark
3DMark Storage
UL's newest 3DMark SSD Gaming Test is the most comprehensive SSD gaming test ever devised. It is superior to testing against games themselves because, as a trace, it is much more consistent than variations that will occur between runs of the actual game.

4,107 isn't a bad result. This test doesn't thrash the SSD like a multi-TB file transfer would, so the board's minuscule M.2 heatsink doesn't impact the score.
3DMark Time Spy Extreme
Time Spy Extreme has lost favor as a graphics benchmark to Speed Way and Steel Nomad, but its CPU test is still a good measure of multi-core performance.

The differences between the boards are minor, with only a few hundred points separating them when measured by CPU score.
Benchmarks - Gaming
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is brutal on graphics cards, but without features like ray tracing, it becomes more sensitive to CPU and memory performance differences.

It's no surprise that the motherboard makes little difference in graphically limited scenarios.
Horizon Zero Dawn
With the 'favor performance' preset, Horizon Zero Dawn can hit high frame rates on powerful graphics cards.

The B850M AORUS Stealth Ice shows that it's no slouch when it comes to gaming.
Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition
Metro Exodus received an update that added improved DLSS support, enhanced ray tracing features, and variable rate shading, among other things. Still, with a powerful graphics card, it is affected by CPU and memory performance at 1080p, though less so with a card like the RTX 4070 Ti Super.

Just four frames per second cover the entire field in this test.
VRM and SSD Temperatures
These tests show the differences between each motherboard's cooling assemblies. Each board is subjected to a 20-minute Cinebench loop, while the SSD test records the peak temperature during the lengthy 3DMark Storage test.

A peak VRM temperature of 57 degrees isn't a bad result. Many of the boards ahead of it cost a heck of a lot more than $250.

63 degrees is functionally acceptable, but it's disappointing given how well a board like the GIGABYTE X870 AORUS Elite performs with its tower-style heatsink.
Final Thoughts
Demand for motherboards with backside connectors remains low, and even less so for Micro-ATX options. The MSI Pro B850M-A Wi-Fi PZ is its only real competitor. It's about $30 cheaper but has only two M.2 slots, and I think the GIGABYTE looks better, which is arguably the whole point of backside-connector boards.
Of course, plenty of standard Micro-ATX boards sit around the $250 mark. The MSI MAG B850M Mortar Wi-Fi is similarly priced and includes 20Gbps USB, a better audio codec, four SATA ports, and 320MHz Wi-Fi 7. Again, though, it's not a backside connector board, and that alone is the whole point of the GIGABYTE B850M AORUS Stealth.
It offers a solid, though not stellar, set of features for its $250 price. It's a board that really appeals because of its aesthetics. A white-themed build with invisible cables looks so neat and clean. But it's not all looks and no substance. It's great to see 5G LAN making its way to the lower end of the market. It has a decent number of USB ports, DIY-friendly features, a mature BIOS, and strong performance. I also like the inclusion of both DP and HDMI ports, and rear power and reset buttons.
It has a 64MB BIOS with an integrated Wi-Fi driver and guaranteed Zen 6 support. The latter point is true of other B850 boards, but it's a decisive advantage over Intel B860 boards. However, its SSD cooling is a step backward, which is disappointing given GIGABYTE's recent history. I'm also a bit skeptical of the lofty performance claims surrounding X3D Turbo Mode.

If you plan to build a system with a cheap AM5 CPU and a low-spec graphics card, cheaper options exist, but they won't be as attractive as the GIGABYTE B850M AORUS Stealth Ice. And don't forget, there's a black option too if you prefer.
Pair it with a lovely white case, tasteful RGB lighting, white RAM, and a white graphics card, and you'll have a system that demands to be shown off. It's got a solid upgrade path, and it's great to know a system built around the GIGABYTE B850M AORUS Stealth Ice will last for years to come while still looking fantastic.
