Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up

A few things separate a gaming headset from a standard pair of over-the-ear headphones, with the big one being the inclusion of a microphone to support voice chat. For several years, most gaming headsets included a microphone to facilitate basic in-game chat, which meant that the overall microphone or voice quality was serviceable but nowhere near broadcast quality. However, with the rise of streaming, content creation, and even things like working from home, a lot of people have grown to learn that a high-quality microphone on a headset can be just as important as the quality of the listening experience.

The new Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset is impressive because, although it retains the stylish look and feel of the company's recent gaming headsets, everything you see has been redesigned or rebuilt from the ground up. That means it's more evolution than iteration, and one of its immediate improvements compared to previous headsets and even similarly priced products from competing brands is the broadcast-quality microphone. The 48 kHz/16-bit microphone features the specs you usually find on a speaker or driver. And when paired with BLUE technology and Logitech's G Hub software, the microphone can deliver broadcast-quality results.

Logitech is keenly aware that communication is a key part of gaming, whether during a competitive round of your favorite shooter, streaming the latest single-player game on Twitch, or jumping into Discord. The microphone quality for a wireless headset at this price is exceptional, and it is reason enough to put the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset high on the list of best wireless gaming headsets for 2025.

The good news is that the Logitech G522 is more than a headset with a great microphone. It offers excellent sound and stylish RGB-lit comfort in a lightweight design that can be worn for hours. Let's dig in.

Design & Software Support

Design

The Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset is the company's first gaming headset with a fabric suspension band, often called a ski-band. This means less pressure on your head from the hard plastic headband, allowing you to wear the headset longer and avoid fatigue. The cups also feature a new design and altered shape, with dual layers of memory foam (with one being a dedicated cooling layer) and a soft fabric covering. There's also consideration for those wearing glasses, which is nice. And with the lightweight 290-gram build, you're looking at a comfortable headset that might take a moment to get used to, as the fit is designed for the headband to sit on the front half of your head.

Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset Review 12

Rounding out the physical design, you've got RGB lighting with four customizable zones on each earcup. Although RGB on a headset is purely for aesthetics, the lighting here is impressive because it adds to the style. Also, Logitech has compensated for the additional battery drain, as you still get up to 40 hours of use with lighting turned on, which jumps up to 90 hours with lighting turned off. All controls can be found on the left earcup, which includes a dedicated power switch, a Bluetooth/Wireless toggle, a volume wheel, and a microphone mute button that plays an audio cue when triggered.

The Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED is versatile, too, with tri-mode connectivity covering wired (over USB), low-latency wireless, and Bluetooth. Thanks to the detachable microphone, the headset can be worn as a standard pair of headphones. That said, there are limitations; there's no dual connectivity mode for Bluetooth and wireless audio simultaneously, and without any hardware noise cancellation, this limits their use in a loud environment.

Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset Review 9

As for the all-important stuff, namely the audio, drivers, and out-of-the-box tuning, the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED is impressive, thanks to the 40mm PRO-G drivers. However, there are some oddities with the default out-of-the-box sound, which is best described as warm and neutral. The low-end and high-end are crisp and punchy; however, mid-range detail and rich bass require tinkering with equalizer settings to get the most out of the headset. This is not a deal breaker, but something to keep in mind, especially when you pair it with spatial audio like DTS Headphone:X.

Adding a dedicated G Mobile app makes customization a breeze when you're not connected to a PC, which is always a plus for a wireless gaming headset. Logitech's software can also be used to customize the fantastic microphone, which is one of the headset's standout features. As the introduction details, the microphone offers broadcast-quality voice recording and chat, seriously punching above its weight for a gaming headset in this price range.

Software Support

When connected to a PC, the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset is customized by Logitech's G Hub software. This software tool is one of the better options for gaming gear as it's modular (it only downloads the components you need for your hardware), simple to use, and includes quick tutorials and guides for every bit of Logitech G gear connected to your PC. As the default sound tuning can be a little flat on the low-end and mid-range, the good news is that the default window for the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED is the EQ and Spatial Sound page.

Here you can choose from a handful of curated presets, create your own, or browse through community presets made for the G522. The 10-band equalizer includes an advanced mode to fine-tune the curve, too, so there's a lot of room for creating a sound profile for the games or media you love. Although there's a Spatial Audio tab, this takes you to the DTS Sound Unbound website to install the app. Spatial Audio for the G522 on PC is handled by DTS Headphone:X, which is one of the more subtle and impressive virtual surround solutions that can be used for games, media, and music.

The fantastic microphone on the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset also gets a dedicated section in the G Hub software. This section offers several microphone presets and the option to enable or disable Blue VOICE technology. Because the microphone is broadcast-quality, making changes here provides a wide range of options, with the Broadcaster settings, in particular, creating the sort of prominent tone and depth you'd find on a high-quality YouTube video.

G Hub is also where you can change the lighting on the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED headset. You can choose from different presets or manually adjust each cup's four lighting zones. Here, you can also adjust the brightness of the lighting. We found that 40-50% offered the best results for extending the headset's battery life.

Performance & Microphone Quality

Performance

There's a lot of detail and nuance to be found with the drivers in the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset; however, the default out-of-the-box sound is a little flat for gaming. You can get some impressive audio with a few tweaks to the bass, mid-range, and high-end frequencies. For this review, we played a bunch of DOOM: The Dark Ages, a game where you spend a lot of time in larger arenas moving around and dodging incoming attacks. It's a game that, when the action heats up more often than not, you're surrounded, and the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED does a fantastic job of conveying direction and spatial awareness on a battlefield.

Things get even better when you enable DTS Headphone:X spatial audio, which creates a strong sense of space. The Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED is also a great headset for gaming on the PlayStation 5, where you can make changes and adjust the audio via Logitech's G Mobile app for iOS and Android devices. On PS5, we tested the G522 with Assassin's Creed Shadows, a game that features excellent sound design with some truly immersive audio while simply running around the game's open-world environments. Here, the G522 picks up all the little details and more, delivering a fantastic audio experience for console and couch gamers.

Outside of gaming, the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED is also great for listening to music or streaming media, though you will need to boost the bass a bit to get a richer and fuller sound.

Microphone Quality

The Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED features one of the best microphones on a wireless gaming headset for around $150, delivering broadcast-quality sound free from distortion and unwanted background noise. The recording you're listening to here captures the default out-of-the-box microphone quality without post-processing. Suppose you're after the sound you'd find in a professional YouTube presentation or video. In that case, we recommend using the Blue VOICE tech bundled with Logitech's G Hub software and one of the 'Broadcaster' presets.

Final Thoughts

The Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset is here, and even though it arrives in a competitive market, the redesigned look and feel and improvements help make it stand out from the pack. From the lightweight build to the comfortable cups, it ticks all the comfort and style boxes right out of the gate. However, the hardware and software support impresses the most, with the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED offering detailed and rich sound with a broadcast-quality microphone to match. For the best results, you will need to mess around with the equalizer and other settings, as this isn't your typical bass and high-end heavy gaming headset.

Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset Review 11

The Logitech G522 is also versatile, with tri-mode connectivity and the ability to connect to a PC or PlayStation 5 or take it on the go. Ultimately, the Logitech G522 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Headset is a winner and something to consider if you're after something lightweight, comfortable, with great sound, and a microphone that can be used for much more than basic in-game chat.
