Sony's new PS5 tech may facilitate some sort of 8K resolution gaming in the console market.

Today another major outlet reported on the PS5 Pro's developer documentation. This time it was The Verge, who reiterated a lot of the same details that were originally published by Insider Gaming. While a lot of the focus has been put on the PS5 Pro's beefier 33TFLOP GPU and other hardware improvements, these upgrades were made specifically to better enable Sony's new upscaling tech.

Sony has developed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is its own in-house answer to NVIDIA's DLSS and AMD's FSR. Both of these technologies are used to upscale resolution, and Sony's does the same while also being powered by a proprietary machine-learning solution. What's surprising about PSSR is that the PS5 Pro documentation apparently mentions that Sony is working on 8K resolution support.

When it comes to 8K, there's no elaboration on the topic. All we know is that Sony wants to have PlayStation consoles play games in 8K resolution--albeit through heavy-concessioned tech like PSSR upscaling.

This reinforces other reports that PSSR could stretch over to the PlayStation 6 console in some fashion, with the PS5 Pro having paved the way to Sony's 8K upscaling ambitions.

The PS5 Pro seems to be a big stepping stone between generations with a greater emphasis on visual quality and adequate frame tightening, all while freeing up the CPU to do extra tasks (with the CPU boost mode). Sony even cracked open the PS5's allocated system memory and gave developers an extra 1.2GB of RAM to use--which is huge, considering the PS5 Pro has unified memory. Sony also supercharged the RAM and boosted speeds by +28%, from the PS5's 448GB/sec to a faster 576GB/sec.

The CPU upgrades should come with the PS6, and when ready, the upscaling wizard-tech could help developers eventually hit some measure of 8K gaming on PlayStation hardware.
