Star Wars movies will be put on hold as Disney shifts towards shows on its streaming platform.
After Rise of Skywalker releases this December, Disney won't have a new Star Wars film for a while. Company CEO Bob Iger confirmed the news in a recent investors call: "Star Wars XI, which comes out this December, will be the last of the Skywalker Saga. We'll go into a hiatus for a few years before the next Star Wars feature. There'll be a lot of creative activity in the interim."
The news comes after Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff scrapped plans for their new Star Wars trilogy. There's also rumors that Rian Johnson's planned extended universe trilogy, which had a December 2024 release attached to it, has been shut down by Lucasfilm. Nothing's been confirmed though.
The future of Star Wars films is up in the air right now and it could be quite a while before we get another film. Following Johnson's trilogy, there's supposed to be an untitled Star Wars film in 2026 or thereabouts. It's presumed Marvel producer Kevin Feige will be involved with the project.
In the meantime, we'll still have lots of Star Wars content to chew on.
Disney is planning a number of new Star Wars shows on Disney+ including the gritty bounty hunter focusedThe Mandalorian, which premieres in two days, and an untitled Obi-Wan show starring Ewan McGregor.
