E3 2019 - A sequel to Breath of the Wild is in the works, Nintendo confirmed at its E3 showcase.
Nintendo's next Zelda game will be a "full sequel" to 2017's landmark Breath of the Wild, a Switch launch game that put strong emphasis on gameplay and exploration over graphics. "The sequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development," Nintendo said during its E3 Direct. Breath of the Wild's fun-based approach will be the pathway for future Zelda games--or at least the upcoming one--and the sequel will follow the same real-time action and RPG elements as its predecessor.
The teaser footage Nintendo showed sets a grim tone for the sequel. After defeating the Calamity in the previous game, Link and Zelda go into underground crypts of the ruined Hyrule Castle and inadvertently awaken an ancient evil. The heart of the Calamity is still beating, and resurrects a decrepit archenemy struck down by the Hero of Light.
Who could it be? The remains of Ganon? Something worse?
No release date info was announced for the new Zelda sequel, and it's possible it could launch alongside a next-gen Switch in 2020 or 2021.
