Xbox One X FreeSync testing begins next week

Microsoft recently confirmed FreeSync 2 support is coming to the current Xbox One consoles as a beta test next week.

During the newly brought back Xbox Insider show Major Nelson announced that FreeSync would arrive on both Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles next week for members of the insider alpha program. We've known for quite some time that the Xbox One X supports FreeSync/FreeSync 2 and HDMI 2.1, but up until now the features, which help synchronize the display's and console's refresh rates for smoother gaming, haven't really been discussed too much. But now Microsoft breaks that silence.

"Starting next week users in the Xbox Insider alpha ring will be able to play on AMD Radeon FreeSync displays for variable refresh output on Xbox One X and Xbox One S," Xbox's Larry Hryb said during the broadcast.

However, the consoles are only getting FreeSync 2 support next week. FreeSync 2 combines lower-latency gaming optimization with HDR visuals, but the Xbox One X/S won't run FreeSync over the DisplayPort protocol. Instead users will need a monitor/display that can run FreeSync over HDMI.

It will probably be some time before support rolls out for all Xbox console gamers (with the exception of original 2013 Xbox One owners of course) as Microsoft will need to test out the features, but I'm curious how much feedback will be gleaned given FreeSync 2 aren't super common.
