Qualcomm has renewed its global patent license agreement with Apple, with the new deal taking effect April 1, 2027, right after the current agreement runs out.

The company confirmed the renewal in a brief announcement, without disclosing financial terms or how long the new agreement will run. "We are pleased to extend the Apple license agreement," said John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing.

This licensing relationship goes back to 2019, when Apple and Qualcomm settled years of patent litigation and signed a six-year deal with a two-year extension option. Apple exercised that option in 2024, pushing the agreement's end date to March 2027. It looks like this new renewal simply picks up where that one leaves off.

That's notable timing given Apple's own progress on modems. The company's C1 chip, which debuted in the iPhone 16e, was Apple's first in-house cellular modem and a real step toward relying less on Qualcomm hardware. That chip still lacks mmWave 5G support though, an area where Qualcomm remains ahead, so Apple probably still needs Qualcomm's patents even as it builds more of its own silicon.

Apple has long been one of Qualcomm's largest licensing customers. A renewal like this probably matters more to Qualcomm's bottom line than to Apple's plans, since it keeps a steady stream of royalty revenue flowing regardless of how fast Apple's own modem work progresses.

iPhone buyers likely won't notice any difference from this deal. Apple will keep shipping whatever mix of Qualcomm and Apple silicon works best for each device, on its own schedule, license or no license.
