Dragon Quest, the OG fantasy series that kicked off JRPGs back in the 80s, has unlocked a major milestone with 100 million lifetime sales.
Another one of Square Enix's IPs has broken the deca-diamond sales threshold, and it's an old-school JRPG icon. The publisher today confirmed that the legendary Dragon Quest franchise has now sold over 100 million units worldwide; over the last 40 years, the series has been home to dozens of game releases that tally up to the impressive figure.
"The beloved DRAGON QUEST franchise has surpassed 100 million games sold. This milestone arrives on the heels of critically acclaimed remakes of the series' most beloved titles, with a highly anticipated new spin-off and the next mainline title on the horizon," Square Enix says in a press release.
Square Enix is one of the oldest video game publishers that are still around today. With Dragon Quest on NES, the company helped revive the ailing console market after the great crash of '83, delivering one of the most enduring franchises.
Dragon Quest franchise sales have grown tremendously over the years, from 76 million unit sales in mid-2018 all the way up to the current 100 million mark in present day. That's about 24 million sales in a little over 8 years, spread across the 10+ Dragon Quest games that the publisher released during the period.
The next mainline game is Dragon Quest XII, and Square Enix actually rebooted this sequel, changing its name from Flames of Fate to Beyond Dreams and giving the sequel a much brighter and more upbeat focus.
