TL;DR: Rockstar confirms Jason and Lucia remain a paired narrative in GTA 6: players can switch between them and choose how to engage with their relationship, but the story requires them to stay together for most of the game and work as partners, while players won't be forced into tender interactions.

The curtains have been pulled back on Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6 in an extended look that showcased incredible cutscenes revealing more about the relationship between our two protagonists, Jason and Lucia.

As we have been teased for quite some time, Grand Theft Auto 6 will enable players to switch between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. The simplicity and seamlessness of the switching was showcased in the 20-minute extended look trailer, where it can be seen that holding R1 on the PlayStation controller and selecting either character will teleport the player directly into their shoes after only a few seconds of loading.

Other interesting facts to point out about Jason and Lucia are that players will have options to interact with their companion, and presumably these will influence an ongoing companion system. For example, Jason is given the option to "hurry" Lucia, which would likely influence their relationship negatively. GTA 6 fans are now wondering the extent of the dynamically changing relationship between Jason and Lucia, raising questions such as, "Can we break them up?".

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

Can players choose to ignore the relationship mechanics between Jason and Lucia without penalty?

Yes. Rockstar says players will not have to engage in the nurturing, lovey-dovey aspects of Jason and Lucia’s relationship and will not be penalized for opting out of those interactions. However, the narrative is structured so the circumstances require Jason and Lucia to stay together for most of the story and work together.
Question #2

How does character switching between Jason and Lucia work on PlayStation controllers?

In the extended look trailer, switching is done by holding R1 on the PlayStation controller and selecting either character, which teleports the player into that character’s shoes after a few seconds of loading. The switch is presented as simple and seamless.
Question #3

Do player interactions like telling Lucia to 'hurry' affect their relationship in the game?

Question #4

Does the narrative force Jason and Lucia to remain together for most of GTA 6's story?

That question was answered by Rob Nelson, the head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, who said in a recent IGN article that players won't have to engage in the lovey-dovey, nurturing aspects of a relationship if they don't want to, and won't be penalized for choosing to do so. However, the narrative is structured in such a way that Jason and Lucia and the events that transpire require them to stay together.

"The narrative is structured in such a way that the circumstances they find themselves in require them to stay together for most of the story and work together. At the very least they will get through most things as partners in crime," explained Nelson. "I don't want to say too much more about this because I don't want to spoil anything. It really adds a compelling element to things, and it's one of the reasons we wanted to approach this sort of story, because it's completely different for us. Could we bring some sort of emotional resonance to GTA for people if they wanted to engage with it? Could we also provide mechanisms for people to just opt out of it if they're not into it? If they feel like, 'I don't want a relationship in this?' That's what we're going to find out. It's not something that we want to foist upon players."
