SEGA shows off the first glimpse of gameplay from its new Virtua Fighter game, which is in development for PS5 and Xbox.

A new Virtua Fighter is on the way from SEGA for the first time in nearly 20 years. The project still doesn't have a name, and SEGA hasn't made a big marketing push just yet, but the company did confirm the new Virtua Fighter is being developed by the group responsible for the Yakuza game series.
SEGA's official descriptions for the game are very basic and don't reveal much: "An all-new title in the iconic Virtua Fighter series has been revealed at the hands of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio," reads the small info snippet.
Now SEGA has debuted a quick 1-minute teaser of Virtua Fighter's gameplay, highlighting some pretty smooth and fluid animations. Combat looks crunchy but responsive and swift, and from first glance, I was reminded of modern day Tekken games. There's also a nice slow-down mechanic that shows off satisfying impact animations, somewhat reminiscent of Mortal Kombat (albeit a lot more tame). I noticed an interesting dodge mechanic as well.
SEGA says that it'll show more Virtua Fighter gameplay at this year's Tokyo Game Show that begins on September 25.
There's no release date or even a launch window for the new Virtua Fighter just yet. In the meantime, SEGA is releasing an entirely new separate version of Virtua Fighter 5 REVO in October for $20. It's called World Stage and it looks to be the penultimate version of VF5.
